hello guys,
my stock ( except for 37" tires) '05 ram started shifting kinda weird on me last week while pulling our loaded toy hauler up some long grades on a recent trip.I had it in tow/haul mode and on long pulls either the converter is locking too early or it was upshifting when it shouldnt,it was really bogging the truck down and just acting strange.the truck has 96K miles on it and has never given me any issues.Weve got a 30hr round trip planned to idaho coming up so i would like some ideas on what might be happening,thanks !

(ps i havent checked for codes,is there a way to do it without a scanner?)

 

Unfortunantly the 04.5 and 05 trucks have the worst transamission programing ,tow/haul only changes the shift stragey to a delayed shift and can't lock out overdrive. I added the BD towloc and the overdrive lockout which is a must have addition and not to pricey or hard to install.
As for your main question I haven't a clue why it would have changed from the way it's been shifting,there are times on mine even with the BD boxes that it goes to lock up to soon when in a hard pull and egt go thru the roof.Best of luck on your trip.

 

You can have your computer flashed so the 05 works like the previous 03 tow haul. I had mine done about 5 years ago,and it works exactly like the 03. I can lockout overdrive.

 

I have an 04.5 and when towing(boat=9800lbs) with the O/D on it still hovers around 2800-3000 RPM when at 60MPH, 3500-3800 when accel. up an incline. A couple of times it up shifted and RPMs dropped to around 1300-1500 at 60 and had massive power, but hasn't done it since. Took it to Mech. and he said there was no way it was pulling a load @1300 @60. It was and I loved the low end grunt.
