05 auto with issues...

I received a call the other day from a friend that said his truck was running rough and blowing black smoke. I went over and had a look yesterday. Checked fuel pressure and all I got was a dribble, no pressure on the gauge. I noticed it was running rough but no knocking. Checked the oil and its 1.5" above the full mark and smells like diesel. I suspect a stuck injector as well as dead lift pump.

Anything else I should be looking for?

He is going to drain the crank case and we are looking at getting a new lift pump as well as a full set of injectors but....if there is more wrong, so far no codes but wouldn't want to be throwing parts at it if the oil got severely diluted and there could be an issue with the cylinders etc.

We changed out the fuel filter and it was nasty...after the new one went in, he says it was/is running a bit better but still has a miss and I see puffs of white. He is not driving it anymore.

Coolant level is normal.

So is my diagnosis of a stuck injector accurate?

This truck has been bone stock all its life and it has 300,000 kilometers on it.

Scotty, it could be a few different things but here's where to start. Since it's a third gen the injectors are under the valve covers. The most probably causes are a loose fuel line, a cracked fuel line or nut on the injector or a cracked injector.

ok when I read that I thought, yup the injectors are under the valve covers. good start. If I was to find an injector outside the valve cover, we may have another problem. J/K.
Its at least one injector...getting a set asap.

You find an injector outside the valve cover tell him to have a nice day and run, or in your case hobble away.

Could be a broke line or nut too. I would pull the covers before you change the oil and turn it over, look for the obvious. One other thing, do not use your fingers or hand to feel for leaks on this system. The pressures generated can inject fuel into the skin and you certainly don't need another problem with your limbs.

I have seen what the high pressures can do...too late once it does what it does. It slices any flesh easily with a deep searing injection of diesel to compound the injury.

I'll just walk to my truck, get in and drive away. LOL
