04.5 Lift Pump Location? & What is that black square cooler to the right of it?
04.5 Lift Pump Location? & What is that black square cooler to the right of it?
Sorry for the simple question, first time i really looked into a 3rd gen.
I was helping a buddy change his 04.5 fuel filter.
Where is his lift pump, it appears to be a black cylinder looking thing behind his fuel filter? Link below has same pic.
Also, What is that black square "cooler w/fins" -loookn- box thing to the right of all of this, it appears to be attached to the block right in front of where the transmission meets? He has an auto, is it a heat exchanger?
Thanks
ps. same question here while searching. talking about the finned item.

I second that question. I haven't had much time to look it up, but I don't recall seeing that on my 2nd gen 24v. Hopefully someone will chime in, or i'll end up with homework assignment.

Starting in 2001 (or 2002 can't remmeber exactly), the lift pump was moved to the fuel filter housing (black plastic cylinder on back of filter housing. Before that it was mounted on the block (which you seem to be familiar with). Starting with 2005 (and all retrofit of lift pumps from now on), the transfer pump is in the tank.
04.5 does not have a lift pump. Starting mid year 04 they started putting them in the tank. Now they retrofit all 24v to the in-tank version when the stock lift pump goes out. So you will not see his lift pump as it is now in the tank on that truck.

Pourin Diesel is right.

I have to differ with you on that. Mine is an 04.5 and I do not have the lift pump on the block mine is in the tank. I don;t think there is a difinitive cut off as to when they quite with the block side pump. I work at a Dodge Dealership (don't hold that against me, we're not all bad) and most of the 04.5's that I've seen come through here are in tank.

We can figure this out. If you have an automatic and you still have the throttle position sensor (TPS)mounted on the engine (in front of the intake horn), then you have an 04.5. On automatics, they couldn't cost reduce and get rid of the on engine tps (with cables) for the much cheaper pedal mounted tps (no cables) that is on the 2005's because of the TV cable used for kickdowns. For 2005 autos they have whats called the TTVA (Trans throttle valve actuator) that is a little electric motor that simulates the TV cable for downshifts.
