04.5 lift pump

A buddy of mine has an 04.5 with a lift pump that just went out. He is having trouble finding one w/o going to the in tank conversion. He needs his truck running today and the stock lift pump was good for 130,000 miles. He wants to replace it w/ similar to stock pump. Cummins wants $400, dealer wants nearly $300 for in tank retro fit kit. Any ideas or sources for lift replacement 04.5 lift pump?

Re: lift pump

I think you would be better off with the in tank lift pump as the diesel fuel will help cool pump and less chance of another failure.

It is not for me and he needs the truck fixed today/tomorrow. The stock pump lasted 130000 miles.

As for a stock unit I think your limited to cummins/dodge. Seems most are doing the in tank pump or going to a FASS, Walbro setup. For the money your going spend getting a oem pump I would spend a little more and upgrade to a aftermarket setup IMO.
My FASS toke about 2 hours to install on a wednesday night in the garage.

Don't waste your time with another OEM unit. Order a Walbro Kit or FASS and have it overnighted to you....then get it installed. If your friend can just wait a couple more days w/o his truck he will have a much much better pump that will probably not leave him in this position again.

If that is absolutely not an option, I hear a few guys running a Holley pump you can probably buy at a local auto parts place.

He went with the in tank retro fit kit from Dodge says he will just put it in himself. I know a couple more guys with 03-04.5 year model trucks. If it were mine I would take it to the dealer and have them retrofit to the in tank pump while it is still under warranty. Thanks for the quick feedback.

Will they actually do that if it's still working? I thought they'd only do it if the original one quit... If they're going to do the retrofit for free I'll be going to the dealer at about 69,990 miles...

You could allways unhook the pump from the motor and fuel supply, give it 12 volts and let it run until it quits. It sounds like it needs to be replaced regardless of it is working or not. Too many guys stranded because of this pump.

If I were you I would go with the Glacier Diesel unit with the 2 micron filter. You can find them at www.glacierdiesel.com.

Man Brent - don't go putting ideas in my head !!!

LOL - I'll probably go with the Glacier system when my pump dies - I'll take advantage of the additional filtration at the same time.

Why wait until you wind up stranded somewhere? What if you are 3 states away from home when it happens? Then you'll be waiting around for some Dodge dealer to put the in-tank replacement in your truck, assuming they have one available and it isn't backordered.

No thanks, I chose to be pro-active.

No you don't, the kit comes with another pickup tube you install. You can switch back to your stock pump this way if the walbro ever takes a dive.

ON EDIT: I'm not sure if yours is in the tank or not. I know the 05's are, not sure about the 04.5. Someone will chime in.
