04 5.9 knock noise

hello, i recently joined the forum and thank you very much for that

i am here today because for around the past year'ish i have had a knocking noise that i cant pinpoint in my engine and i've tried feeling for it,listening for it, and whatever i could think of to find the source but the truck has ran great for around a year now with the noise, so my question to you guys and gals here in the forum is if you would have any ideas at all i was planning on buying a set of injectors just to freshen them up because i bought the truck a year ago and never did them...
i have not noticed any power loss, or the noise speeding up like a bad rod, or anything and since i couldn't find the source i figured it will either show itself or never give me an issue but i would really like to find this thing seeing as how im finally able to have time at home and not on the pipeline (recently started a business)..
again thank you very very much for letting me become a member and also thank you for any and all input,,
if i dont reply right away im truly sorry i just overwork myself sometimes haha, but thank you again!!
thank you
P.S the only thing done to the truck is,flatbed and rebuilt trans about 500 miles ago but the motor is stock at-least from everything i've seen,
no tuner or anything
thanks

I've always found a stethoscope to be valuable for pinpointing noises......Ben

yeah i have a buddy who's an emt, next weekend when i get back home i'm gonna see if i cant steal it for the day haha, The truck is in the garage parked at home right now i took the 03 hemi to the hotel for work, so im just hoping its something simple.....
Because i was reading that the thrust bearings can make a ticking noise in these engines and thats never a good thing haha but it runs amazing, so if that is the issue at-least ill be able to fix it before it let loose since i dont have to drive it...i will get back with my findings as soon as i return home then maybe i can get to the bottom of this.. Also when i bought the truck and drove it home ( which was a 6 hour drive ) it never gave me any issue at all, it ran great, never skipped a beat.. so im hoping its something i can fix that has done damage just yet ... fingers crossed and ill report back as soon as i get home,
thank you for the fast response though <3

I don't know how well a medical stethoscope would work...A mechanic's stethoscope will have a metal probe to pick up noises by holding it against various parts of whatever machine you're testing...Your SnapOn dealer of even Harbor Freight should stock them...You could even use a long screwdriver for the purpose......Ben

I like to use a 4 foot piece of water hose. Just move it around the engine while holding the other end up to your ear. Usually works great for me. I have a mechanics stethoscope but I like this better

i wasn't sure, it was just the closest thing i could think of, i forgot they made a mechanics one haha, and thank you guys for the ideas i will try them and report back...
I head home tomorrow and ill post what my findings are, I'm hoping its something simple like the thrust bearings and not the actual rod knock, but no matter what she will get what she needs haha
I refuse to let it die haha
but again thank you guys for your input i will let you know what i find
thanks again for the help thus far

i havent gotten a mechanic's stethoscope just yet, But i am finally home and i am gonna run and try to find one, and i'm also gonna grab some hose to try as well.
I did start the truck and i realized that when you start to rev the engine the noise quits, i dont know if that helps diagnose the issue but around 2,000rpm or a little higher maybe , it goes away, and i had two people outside the truck listening and they both said it goes away as well, which i found really weird because if it was a rod knock shouldn't it just keep knocking and speed up but still be heard...?
I am very familiar with engines and everything, but this just had me stumped haha, it has been awhile since my last diesel so i am freshening up again, but i will post my sound location findings tonight when i get back to the truck and listen around for the sound.
Again thank all of you very much for your input and help i greatly appreciate all help

sorry for the delay guys i got called out on an emergency gas leak but im back now, And i have narrowed the sound down to the front section of the motor and especially on the very top front section of the valve cover, i am going to pull the valve cover tomorrow and possibly unhook each injector, one at a time and see if the noise stops.
if it doesn't then i am gonna try to see if i cant figure out a fairly cheap way to test the fuel pressure because i cant really afford to run out and buy a nice fancy scan tool just yet haha.
the truck fires right up and idles great has no blow by AT ALL and absolutely no smoke from the exhaust..
It is a bone stock engine the only work done to the truck was a rebuilt transmission with upgrades because i told the shop i did not want to have to keep pulling the thing i wanted it to be reliable as can be for daily driving with towing here and there.
but as for motor it is stock everything down to the air filter haha so no power mods and no tunes of any sort... ( not yet ) lol
if there is any info that might help please let me know and i can provide anything needed
P.S. i didn't get the stethoscope yet but it is ordered but i used a hose and also i used a screw driver against my ear as well which worked pretty well, haha

again i appreciate all of you guys help with this issue
