My brother owns an 03 3500 w/6 speed and 4.10s, it has a banks system on it.(he bought it that way).

I have been driving it for the last two weeks and it has a couple of issues that could be related.

1st. It seems to run out of fuel when under hard ecceleration or climbing a hill, power drops off and if you push the pedal it will bog.

2nd. Sometimes the engine will stumble when you first step on the peddle, usually leaving a stop sign.

I'm just not familiar with these common rails.

Any ideas? lift pump? I replaced the fuel filter.

Can try the key OFF/ON three times to pull up any codes. But it does sound like the lift pump is going out.

The filter change was a good idea. Check your trouble codes to see what you get. 0628 is the lift pump code. If that is not it then next I think I'd try blowing the suction line out that comes from the tank. Blow it back towards the tank to clear a clogged screen, maybe. Then try to find an air leak in the fuel suction line.

Your description does not sound like the lift pump to me. They seem to just quit and then you get another couple of starts and that's it, not gradual output weakening. But if it quits and does not block the line (mine blocked the line), the cp3 could draw through it and be partially starving for fuel.

Check for the code first and see what you get.

When I replaced the fuel pump it seemed to take for ever to start. Can you hear the lift pump on the 3rd gens? I do not hear it.

I'll check for the plugged line? How much fuel does the lift pump flow? How long does it take to start after the filter change? I thought I could just keep clicking the key to prime? I even tried to bump starter for prime like on the 2nd gen and it still did not seem to work. This is why I was thinking that the pump was bad, similar to how the 2nd gens go out.

On the 03s the original pump was on the back of the fuel filter canister and yes bumping the starter is the way to prime it it should run like 25 seconds so you should here it running. If it was replaced with the intank conversion you should still be able to here it run when the starter is bumped I would think. If you dont here it the pump probably died!
