03 HO Power Loss

Has anyone experienced a power loss while towing with an 03 ram dually with the ho engine?

Mine will randomly drop back to idle when towing, especially under load. The only way to get going again is to shut off the engine and restart it. This can be somewhat disconcerting, especially when towing a 36' fifth wheel at highway speed.

My dealer has flashed the ECM and replaced the APPS, however the problem persists.

Have you changed your fuel filter? Mine did it a while back, after some bad fuel.

Fuel filter was replaced and there are no modifications to the engine. The only thing that isn't stock or a Mopar part is the Afe air filter.

you would have a check engine light on if you were in limp home mode. Is the light on? If so, what are the codes?

Mine has done the same thing 4 times. When it does it, it sends out a cloud of black smoke. It will only go up to 2000 RPMs in 2nd gear while towing 5er. It has only done it while towing. Do the same thing, shut it off and restart it and it's fine until the next time. Dealer checked it and could not find any codes, so no fix.

I'd suggest you focus some attention on the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor). Since these diesels are "drive by wire" or more appropriatley "fuel by wire" there may be an issue with the sensor.

The TPS tells the computer how much fuel to output based on your gas pedal position. If it has an intermittent fault then its possible it could tell the computer there is no "throttle" or "fuel" being requested by the user, i.e. it may look like you aren't pressing down on the gas pedal from the computers standpoint because of a faulty position sensor.

NO lights have ever come on, no cloud of smoke and no can any dealer find any error codes. My dealer has replaced the pedal positioning sensor, and it still acts up.

This only occurs when I'm towing my 5th wheel.
