I'm running 3.73s in my 03, and towing up to 12K thus far, I think that particular gearing is ideal. 60 mph - 2000 RPM, and the truck just pulls along. When I get into hills, I've been dropping a gear into 5th just to keep power up, but the sweet spot (on my truck) seems to be around that 2000 RPM mark (versus my 01 at 2200 RPM).

Rod you neglected to mention that you were 'dragging' the trailer with two flat tires too.

Oh I dropped to fourth when that happened. Not because the truck wanted me to, but because I was afraid of starting the straw on fire

Rod

Re:03 at highway speeds

One thing on the surge form several replies back. I have never driven a truck like this that you are not actually moving anything with your foot on the throttle but you are just telling the computer what you desire to be doing and it calls the shots. You are sort of pushing on a joy stick on your kids video system. It may not like you adding full throttle in this position and may actually be just giving you the 90% anyway, as soon as you let up it says that it can give you a different shot and ups the pressure and that may be giving you the feeling of a surge. I notice all the time on mine that it does exactly what it wants to do and not necessarily what I tell it to do. When I try to hotrod it without a load in first and second it doesn't get anywhere near full throttle because it determines you don't need it running light load but as soon as mine hits third on a slight hill wow the computer decides that I can have some throttle and she slams me back into the seat and flies. It is just a little wierd for me since I am used to touching a real throttle shaft with the throttle peddle. Great subject! Good post!

Re:03 at highway speeds

I too have noticed the surge when you first let up on it. Also, it seams to accellerate fast in the higher gears. Without a load, 1st, 2nd and 3rd just don't seam to have the same punch as 4th, 5th and especially 6th. Can any of the tech guys say if this really is the computer? Will the add-on fuel boxes fixed this situation? Thanks,
The Boss Hog

Re:03 at highway speeds

Hog,

This changes under load. When I have the fiver on, I feel the proportionate accelleration in 2nd and 3rd as I do in 4th up. I do notice that it does not seem to "get with it" in 2nd and 3rd running solo as it will in 4th up. It is vicious in 6th at 60 mph.

I also note a surge if accellerating hard solo in maybe 3rd, and suddenly let it up - - don't push the clutch in real quick or the tach will jump up fairly substantially. It definitely acts different under loaded conditions.

Bob

Re:03 at highway speeds

Bob, Glad to hear its not just me. I tried it again this afternoon and I'm convinced with no load, it pulls harder at 3/4 pedal than flat on the floor. Have you had any experience with the add on boxes? Do any of them cure this situation? I will be towing the boat in a couple of weeks and will see if it changes how it pulls.
Latter,
The Boss Hog, loving the winter in Florida ;D

Re:03 at highway speeds

Boss,

I rode in a 2001 with the Edge and injectors, beefed up auto. I almost could not reach a $5 bill sitting on the dash when he stomped it. Reminded me of the good ole days with my race cars. I don't know if they had anything working in the cars a couple years back like ours have. And the auto is not going to give you the same feel either. Mine has plenty of power for what I am doing - - I am not adding anything under the hood except maybe a filter change if they prove out. Oh yeh, maybe a light. I think you will find the same as I - - it changes under load. It pulls hard in all gears except first - - it eases out in first. ??? Figure that one out. Maybe they are afraid of us winding them out too quick.

Bob

Re:03 at highway speeds

RLS, I bought my truck in Hollister. My first diesel also. (buh buy gasser's!) My truck is still stock, 3:55 r/p, 265 tires,
at 70mph my tack is right on the 2000 mark. (Not sure if /how this'll help.) Hardly ever use 1st, other than that, she shifts fine. Gap between 2nd & 3rd is real close.
I'm fully enjoying driving her around, luv the sound she makes when I downshift!
