03 engine shut off

I have been lurking around here for a little while now and there is some great information. I have an 03 SO and it is my first diesel so this site has been very helpful. Anyway, last night I made a turn onto my street and the motor just shut off. I pulled over and tried to restart. I started fine and idled for a few seconds and shut off again. Did this a couple more times with the same result. One of the times I gave it a little throttle and it stumbled and dies. Then after that it idled fine and I was able to get home. I cycled the key and no codes. I let it sit and a couple hours later went to drive it again it did it again. I have checked the fuel filter and it is dark so I am going to change it. Part of the drive was on a bumpy dirt road. I don't know if that makes a difference or not. I am hoping maybe just the filter is dirty. I am also thinking Crank Sensor or Lift Pump. Any help would be appreciated and sorry for the long post.

Your lift pump is dead, if I had to guess. Time for an AirDog or Fass. Do it once!

How many miles on your truck? If you still have the stock lift pump on the frame rail near the filter canister, I would check that first. Some people seem to have trouble with them after 30K miles, and others have gotten over100+K out of them. Dodge is now replacing them with an in-the-tank pump.

Good luck, and enjoy the truck.

The truck has just under 70K on it. As far as I know it is the stock pump. What is the price difference between the stock and aftermarket pumps? It is still under warranty but they can't look at it for a week and a half. Would a dead or dying pump not throw a code?

may not throw a code. If its still on the engine (the pump) DO NOT let them put the intank pump in if you are going to modify it ever! Thats what they did to mine, and the brand new, BETTER pump that was in the tank put out a whopping 7psi....yay...Smarty would pull it to 0psi on #3...had to tear it apart and install the FASS.

Geno's garage is selling a direct replacement for the frame rail pump. Can't remember the price right off hand, but I have been thinking about ordering one and just carrying it in my toolbox just in case.
