the 03 disaster
Re:the 03 disaster
Sorry to hear you are having a problem
You may want to ask the dealer/tech to look at the rear cam seal. My bosses new truck is getting a longblock (at 1300 miles) because the back of the block may have been machined wrong where the seal goes. It was initially diagnosed as a rear main leak...

Re:the 03 disaster
persuasion is difficult but if this were my truck I'd be asking the service manager to escalate up to the zone manager or whatever the next level is. Thing is, they didn't deliver a new truck to you.
I have a big huge problem with dealers using the warranty coverage as a substitute for new. yours isn't new. never was. they need to deliver a new truck to you because thats what you paid for.
When my 02 was new, the service department tried to do this to me regarding a cosmetic item. The detail grunt workers had applied wax all over the black door handle trip pieces and it never came off. You could clean off the black plastic and put armor all on it, and it would look good for a couple of hours only. Anyway, the first response from the servcie manager was "you are covered for 3 years if anything goes wrong". I said "I want you to deliver a new truck to me". they replaced the door handles.
I would seriously be expecting a different truck. I know that will be nearly impossible because dealers just don't think that way, generally. But if you get a good one they might go to bat for you. nuts to the "we'll make this right under warranty" story. the only way they can make it right is to deliver a new truck to you, not one that has had to endure a major repair already. you didn't buy a used truck, you bought a new one!
Unfortunately, you didn't notice this until the deal was closed. too bad it didn't happen before you paid for it 'cause then you can refuse delivery. let us know what happens please!

Re:the 03 disaster
monday update . well pretty **** poor service from the service dept. I had to call them only to here "we dont know where all of the oil is coming from". When i worked for the dealer if a problem like this occured we jumped through hoops to handle them. This is even a five star dealer .in my 17 yrs of turning wrenches there has never been an oil leak i couldnt have at least diag. in a day. Im starting to get a little cranky >

Re:the 03 disaster
This happened on the 00 I had.The gasked that goes on the lifter cover on the drivers side of the block blew out on me one morning on my way to work and pretty well put an end to that engine. They put in a new short block. My son had a contractor working with them that went all over the states and he had a 00 that this same gasket blew sometime before me.They blamed mine on who ever assembled the engine.Very rare on a Cummins but things happen.
Re:the 03 disaster
tuesday update, I had to call twice finally at 3:30 they called to tell me that they think its the rear cam oring but they are going to replace the rear main seal as well . parts are two or three days away at best . this puts me back in the truck next week maybe. Talked to the sales manager he pretty much told me its my truck. They wont give me a new one >

Re:the 03 disaster
nuts. well at least you have some knowledge on this problem. from reading the other posts it sounds like they may entirely miss the fact that you could have a bad block. At least the cummins is repairable and even major engine work can be done. Whether or not you have confidence in their abililty to perform such major work, I don't know! Anyway, here's some things I would proably consider in this situtation if I were in your shoes:
- keep precisely accurate records of all dealership conversations, work performed, what you observe while driving, what you did about it, etc.
- Tell us the dealership's name and let them know that this story is being chronicled on the internet. Let them know that you want to be truthful, not irrational, that you don't dealer bash, etc., but that there are many of us waiting to see how this turns out.
- Keep a log of everything and post the entire updated log every so often. include details like where you drove, what you observed, when, who, and how far the truck was towed, the service manager's refusal to escalate to the DM, your conversations with the Dealer GM, I mean everything.
- Check your state lemon laws with regards to the number of repair attempts and check your experience against those laws and understand your options.
- dont put any mods on your engine.
- check for leaks every so often. take pictures of the affected areas immediately after repair, then periodically after that.
- If you see another leak developing, make an appointment to talk with the service manager (bypass the service writer and don't scheule a repair yet). Show him any pictures you might have. Show him your history log, including his refusal to escalate and his reason why. tell him you want to be reasonable, that you want a reliable truck, that you purchased one on that basis, and that the experience so far does not inspire confidence in either the engine or the dealership's actions taken so far. make an appointment with both the dealer GM and the service manager at the same time if necessary. Ask them to tell you how your confidence is to be inspired and if they think they delivered a new truck to you. (in my opinion the whole new truck experience has been destroyed).
- keep all recipts of oil and filter purchases if you change oil yourself, sign and date every entry. Be absolutely **** about maintenance and your maintenance logs.
Re:the 03 disaster
well i got the truck back today . the final diag. was that cummins forgot to install the adapter plate o ring . Oil leaks are fixed but now it seems to vibrate pretty bad in gear at a stop . Maybe im way to paranoid right now i think i will give it a couple of weeks.
Re:the 03 disaster
whew! well at least a missing part is easily fixed, and that you probably don't have a lemon engine. All the same, though, if one moron on the assembly line can forget a part, they can forget another one. so keep real good records and keep driving - you probably have just as good of an engine now as the rest.
Re:the 03 disaster
I know , when they told me an oring was missing i was both releived and worried at the same time . Ive put 400 mi on it and no leaks but the vibration at idle is pretty bad i compared it to two other trucks and they dont have nor was it there as best as i can remember prior to the repairs
Re:the 03 disaster
Truck goes back in wed for the vibration. I compared it to three other trucks over the weekend and they dont seem to vibrate like mine does. Im guessing that the rear runnout via. the adapter plate wasnt set up properly or the heavy spot on the torque convertor is lined up with the heavy spot on the flex plate. I plan on towing this weekend for the 1st time with the new truck . so i hope it isnt as major as the oil leak
