03 48RE Torque Conv. Lock up?
03 48RE Torque Conv. Lock up?
03.5 truck is in my Sig.
These early 48RE do not have the Tow/Haul mode button, but they do have an O/D on off button.
So the question is...
When I have O/D off and I am in 3rd gear, is my converter supposed to lock up? Or is that only on the newer trucks with the tow/haul mode?
Side note : The converter locks up perfectly in over drive.
Thx

The TC will lock up around 48 mph in 3rd and about 27 mph in second. You may not notice unless you are towing or getting on the pedal some.

I can't feel it engage and I turned on my Edge/juice this morning and it does not show it locking up.
I did push the O/D button to off this morning while I was driving on the freeway (no load) and was driving anywhere from 55 to 65 mph. Never saw it come on. Is there a trick to get it to lock or should it do it as easily as it does in overdrive?
Also to get it to lock in 2nd, does the shifter selector need to be in 2nd?
Thx

It should go into lockup just as in OD - no tricks. Try manually shifting starting in L2 to see if you can feel the TC lockup. Then to drive. I would think that if you can go 65 without lockup, the tranny would start getting warm.
One more test - run your truck up to 70 or so, then decelerate by letting off and pushing the OD off button. The tranny should go into 3rd locked as it slows.

Tried messing with it this morning.
My juice showed it engaging in 3rd under acceleration, but not under a steady speed.
If I had a problem with some solenoid/ect, why would it lock up in O/D so well and not in 3rd?
Thanks

Engine rpm will drop towards idle rpm at any deceleration event when TCC is unlocked - when TCC is locked, engine rpm remains same on decelerate as when cruising or accelerating mildly, varies according to speed of vehicle - when TCC unlocks on decel, engine rpm will suddenly drop towards idle rpm - if you have a tachometer, check it out
