Question '03-'04 black smoke

This may seem a dumb question to some, but is it harder to get the '03-'04 555 engine to blow black smoke than the '05 and up 610s? I had an '06 and with just a BDTD it smoked really nice. This '04 I have now just wont smoke that much even on a Crazy Larry tune. Is this normal for these years?

I wouldnt be very concerned but I put an HE351, 5" turboback, and an AirRaid CAI on it. Im considering a Smarty tuner, but for $600 I want to make sure its the issue first or do I need a set of 50hp or 90hp tips and a pump??

As always, thanks for the help.

Mine does not smoke even with the Smarty on 9. Friend has the BDTD on an 03, runs like a rocket.......nothing wrong with the BDTD.

Mine will smoke pretty good on level 5 and TQ2 on the Smarty. Easy to do with a manual transmission, just lug it.

With the current setup with Smarty level 1 and the VA set to 130 hp I see some smoke at max boost WOT.

Really I am just wanting to know if its normal for these year trucks NOT to smoke like the later years with the same mods. I am concerned that Im running out of fuel with just the few mods I have. Is that possible?

There is a reason behind me telling him to throw it away..it wasnt the performance because it ran good. Mine froze up while tuning another program and scrambled my codes. Not my fault either. I had to have some guy from cummins with a computer to reprogram my truck. After that sold the BDTD and bought a smarty. Also this was on my 04 555high output 6 speed. The smarty set on level 7 would smoke like a coal train. I would go on about bully dog but im prolly just wasting my breath.

Thumbs up

Most know the Smarty is better for the 555 motors. Id just like to make a wise decision on exactly what to buy next. Smarty or maybe fuel items.

if you dont have an upgraded tranny, id be more interested in that. start from the ground up. If your looking to upgrade injectors and stuff you should put a set of head studs also (which racks up in price range). If your just looking to roll alittle coal then just buy a smarty. I feel that it is a good building block tool for big torque and hp for when you are ready to move up.

I see an Edge Juice for '03-'04 in the classifieds for $480. Is that a good tuner for the 555? Or should I just go with the Smarty?

its what ever you want. you could stack that juice on top of the bullydog. Ive never done it, but id say that would give some power. Im sorry that im just dead set on smarty. I guess when a product treats me extremely well, i just have to recommend it to everyone.

Hey, sounds like you have a valid personal experience. I have the Smarty also. Definitely plan on or go from the get go with a "built"tranny.
