Is the EGR even necessary?

Is the EGR even necessary?
I have a bone-stock 2007 6.7.
I had the "PERFORM SERVICE" message pop at about 68k miles and with a little research from this awesome forum, I reset it. I contacted the dealer and it would cost me $600 to get the thing cleaned.
Are there consequences if this thing doesn't get cleaned? It almost feels like it would be cheaper just to get rid of it.
Talking with the dealer, he mentioned that cleaning the EGR is crucial to the motor's operation vice having anything to do with emissions.
Thoughts anyone?

I clean the EGR valve on mine about every second oil change or 10k miles. The cooler has not been cleaned in the 40k that I have put on the truck, and possibly never. 152K now. The EGR valve is the thing on top of the intake horn with a little motor on the end of it. Fairly simple to clean if you are even marginally mechanicaly inclined. Right next to it is the MAP sensor. Clean it at the same time. Much info on this forum about cleaning both. You are also due for a crankcase vent filter, which is located under the valve cover. Also easy to change, and available at Genoes Garage for a great deal less money than the dealer sells them for. The downside of the EGR valve sticking is that it will allow exhaust to flow into the intake constantly. A dirty crankcase vent will dump excessive oil into the turbo inlet. A dirty MAP sensor will send your fuel economy down the toilet.

If you live in a smog check state then you'll need the egr system working.
If not just unplug the egr valve actuator, live with the cel, enjoy a cleaner running engine and forget about it.
Geno's has the kit and instructions for cleaning the egr system and/or just the CCV filter for replacement.
Is it necessary? Only for smog checks.

How do you know it's the EGR? Just wondering, since I would think $600 would be more in-line with a DPF cleaning.
