Keep the 1st gen.
I had a '92 D-250 Reg Cab 5-spd. Shoulda never sold it. It rode great, got excellent mileage, and was easy to drive, even with the power upgrades in the 340hp/840lbft range. I regret selling it.
I have this '97 3500 Dually 2wd 5-spd now and I love it, but it rides rougher than the 1st gen. Mileage is a little better than the 1st gen though when I want it to be, and it has about the same power as the 1st did but with less invested.
I like both, wish I could have both...I'd drive the 1st gen daily and save the 2nd gen for hauling duties and longer trips.
I've seriously been contemplating selling my '97 to get a nice low mileage 1st gen...but I know I'd kick myself in the **** for selling another cool truck.

I don't want to start a fight, but after a week in my new 94 gas burner, the cab seems so small compared to a 1st gen. I know it can't be, but the way the top of the windshield comes back so far it just seems close. It is a reg cab 4x4 1500. Nice runner but I like the way I never hit my head getting in or out of a first gen. Good thing I have a whole yard full of them!
