Some of you might remember the rear drum of my tranny got eaten up..
(no that is not going to become a drivetrain thread)
I have some friends who seem to suffer from WWAIWDW syndrome..
This means "while we are at it why don't we"- it started with me installing a GSK to complement the freshly rebuilt transmission in Peter's 12V and during the test drive "while we are at it" got to fetch the trailer that I had wanted to fetch before but could not due to this:
This happened while passing a fuel truck on the highway.
So some days later on the test drive while we are at it, we get the trailer and need to put some weight on it to have valid test results..
So now while we are at it we unload the "test weight" at Peter's garage to pull the transmission.
As you see this is the direct approach to the transmission for the WWAIWDW guys..
Sometimes you have the opportunity of repairing an automated sandblaster for a customer and WWAIWDW clean the drums.
Those clean drums can't go ona diry axle and WWAIWDW just clean and repaint the frame, springs, and all the other black stuff down there
Well as you can see there is some inacceptable stuff going on- a clean frame and a dirty bed- so WWAIWDW ...
Since the front axle must match the rear one WWAIWDW ..
But, at the same time my wife did not look too kindly upon the little project, and observed that her husband had no time for her..
So WWAIWDI get her a BMW R80 ST in red to match her R100RT in blue, her Honda SLR 650 in yellow and her GasGas Pampera 125 in white. (Only the BMWs shown here, the white one is mine... )
This does take a lot of time away from the WWAIWDW project but it's fun
Marcus, I am jealous.......... I will be looking for a R series in about 2 years when the last of my kids hits 18 ( I have a self imposed prohibition on motorcycles until they are of legal age ).
The white and red ones are EXACTLY what I am looking for.... Those strippers are few and far between around here.... Seems like everyone opted for the vibrating seat/heated grips option in the states.
WOW I thought I got sidetracked into fixing up other stuff with the "while we are at it" syndrome.
You are taking it to a new level.
Nice looking work.

The red one is a stock R80 ST, but the white one is a factory Dakar bike from 83.. you can have a replica built at HPN, but the wait is more than 2 years and you need an R bike in good condition to start with.
If your slf imposed prohibition is riding a bike, you should consider getting an R80 or R100 (Regardless wheter RT, ST, GS, Mystic etc) and to do a WWAIWDW project with it.
This will take you at least two years There is a lot about those bikes on advrider.com under "Airheads"
As you can tell I am really not easily sidetracked, so why doesn't the project go much faster??
Driving to and from customers..
Finding out which hooligan sheared off a 6" steel shaft and why..
Riding with a friend and checking out the moon..
Finding why the "fully restored" engine of an R80G/S runs really bad..
Being really glad that the engine in mine is running fine
Taking a short trip with my wife.. hers is the yellow Honda SLR 650, I did an engine rebuild with lighter high comp piston, conrod, head reshape, camshaft, programmable ignition etc.. )
So, WWAIWDW think about the abysmal fuel supply to the poor VP44..
Since there were some problems with the holley blue I had for a good 150 k miles I bought an aeroquip pump that has no pressure regulator.
This got me thinking about some things that I do not like on the stock tech of the fuel supply, and that I don't like about all the aftermarket stuff to be found.
So I started learning Arduino and now have a pump that gets exactly enough electrical power to maintain 15 psi under normal circumstances, but goes up to 25 psi when under WOT at higher rpm.
I already installed a prototype on an excavator with a VP44 and it looks promising.
The costs are quite low, the arduino with a motor shield and the sensors is around 50-70 US$, and I still have one free output with up to 30A, maybe I will use it for fuel temperature control. (The on-off heater is not to my liking, you get a lot of fluctuations in fuel temp, and I think that maybe I can get less white smoke at idle in cold weather by preheating the fuel a bit higher under these conditions.. )
So, with an idea like that and an Arduino at hand WWAIWDW install a display to inform about fuel pressure, fuel temp, pump amperage, pressure differential across the filter and maybe some other parameters..
But WWIWAI (while I was at it) I found some other uses for the Arduino in automotive tinkering.
I found that it works really nice as a fan regulator and is much more efficient than the resistors, and can operate the cab fan with the truck turned off while watching for under voltage on the battery. (This is nice with the sun shining on the truck, and can also be nice when the truck is plugged in to get the cab up to temp)
WWAIWDPFAG - (while we are at it why doesn't peter find a girlfriend) which leads to needing more space for the addition of a woman and a little girl to his bachelor's household- WWAIWDW build a 150 sq ft addition to his house-
