Where is the keyless entry module on our trucks

I have a 1997 2500 STL that does not have keyless entry. I would like to install keyless entry on the truck. Where would I find the box that recieves the signal from the key fob? I sometimes see 2 gen Dodge trucks in the junkyards I frequent and I would like to get one for my truck. I assume the box woudl mate to an existing connector in my truck, no? Does anyone know how to program a key fob when you don't have a programmed key fob to start with?

Thanks,

Bob

Interested if anyone has pictures also. I think I have one under the dash, but could be aftermarket.

IIRC, new key fobs require the DRB computer at the dealer to program to the vehicle unit.

I suspect that is controlled by the CTM. Almost everything else is.

According to my Factory Service Manual, you are correct.

There are two versions of the Central Timer Module, a basic (no bells & whistles truck) and an "upgrade" one for the remote entry/security systems etc trucks.

It describes it as being located under the dash near the right side of the steering column.

FWIW, the Keyless entry module is part number 056021422 and it is 161 bucks from Mopar Parts America.com.

Looking at the parts manual, it shows a specific wiring harness for the keyless entry trucks, but not a different one for those without, so I am not sure the harness is the same.

One thing is for sure, Brownie has keyless entry, Greenie does not, so this weekend, if it is not raining, I will be under the dash of both to do a little scoping out.

I don't really give a whoop about the keyless entry, but the other functions are nice, no annoying buzzer with the door open and the key in, and with the keyless entry module, it is almost impossible to lock your keys in the truck, so that would be enough for me to add it to Greenie if it is a plug and play.......

Take pictures if you can. I hope it is just plug and play to install it in my truck. I don't want to buy a new unit, I woudl rather get one out of a truck at the junkyard.

Didn't take both trucks apart, but spent much time doping out the wiring in the FSM.

From all evidence, it is NOT a simple plug and play operation.

I'm out of this one, too much changing around for me.

Oh, you can still lock the keys in the truck with the module. Its not like the Chev's where the door won't lock if you leave the keys in the ignition.

IIRC the wiring harness connectors changed from 97-98 models. This may or may not affect you in your quest.

The dealer needs to be seen to program the fobs. My local dealer has been really great to me since the change of ownership. If you are in for service see if they will program the fobs for you. This may be easier after they have seen your face a few times. They are really hungry for return customers right now! Luck

I am not sure just exactly how you could lock them in, on Brownie, no matter what I did, it would unlock right after you hit the lock button anytime the keys were in the Ignition and the truck was not running. Took me a while to figure out what the heck was going on the first time I left the keys in the Ignition.

Before my restoration, my drivers door wouldn't lock using keyless remote. It locked fine using the button on the door, but not with the remote. I replaced the door & now it works fine. I never messed with the module under the dash?

One other thing, while reading my FSM at lunch ( geek that I am ), at least on the 97 models ( and back I suspect ) the RKE module can be programmed by anyone.

Basically you ground the dark green wire ( position 1 ) and wait for it to lock/unlock the doors, then you press the FOB and that should do it.

Bet they changed it for the 98 and newer trucks though.
