Wheel bearings
Wheel bearings
Anyone have any stories of wheel bearings failing at around 60K miles on 2500's or 3500's?

I'm beginning to think that may be my problem (see my humming post). The dealership wants about $250 for the front hub/bearing assembly.
They changed the bearing system in '99. In '99, it would have cost about $60 w/ labor.

Thanks for your replys.

Re:Wheel bearings
I did not know they changed them. I read in a 4x4 mag thet they have a aftermarket up grade for out trucks. it puts a extra set of bearings on the assembly so that it does not wear and cut into the the hub.
DM01

Only have had toi replace one rear seal. I am interested in the aftermarket deal though do you have any info?
Re:Wheel bearings
I can't remember what book it was in but it is in a 4x4 mag like petersons or maybe even truck trend. I will take a look and get back to you. I would like do get the new design also.
DM01
Re:Wheel bearings
The front wheel bearings on the 4x4's are a sealed unit, therefor you can't really service them. It is possible to press out the bearings and clean them up a little, and then regrease them, though. If you try this, be very careful not to damage the seals, as that will require a new hub assembly from the *******. The front hub/bearing assembly on these trucks were designed to be replaced as a unit, and not repacked... Thanks Dodge :
.

Tigerfan, is that $250 solely the cost of the assembly, or did they give you that figure including the labor? I hear of dealers charging $350-$450 per side for the job.

Dodgeman1, although I have not researched it extensively I was unaware of an aftermarket upgrade involving an extra set of bearings... Interesting. The upgrade I am aware of is from Dynatrac, which I believe replaces the entire sealed hub assembly with new spindles/bearings, and converts to a manual-locking hub eliminating the vacuum op. Expensive though.

Just jack your truck up and try to pull/push the front wheels... Any play in the hub will indicate the need for a repair.

Wes

Re:Wheel bearings
After another alignment, I talked with enough people who convinced me the humming from the right/front was the wheel bearing. The part was $255 from Dodge and was a hub/bearing assembly. And no, I couldn't find it anywhere else locally. Fairly straight forward R&R. Took about 45 minutes (with beer). ;D

Thanks for the replys.
Re:Wheel bearings
There is a upgrade that uses two berrings instead of one. They kinda look like a ford hub from what I can tell. It was in a 4x4 mag but I have no idea which one. I will have to find it because I was going to up grade mine someday.
DM01

Re:Wheel bearings
Hope to resurrect this thread - I have a 97 2500 CDT 4x4 with a bad hub/bearing and need to replace it soon. Checker quoted $260, Autozone says it unavailable and the Dealer was closed, so no price there yet. Does anyone have a good source for replacement hub? And, did anyone manage to find info in the aftermarket hub noted in the previous threads?
Thanks.
Greg
