What's the difference between 7500 and 8800 GVW brake pads?
I'm trying to learn the difference between the 7500 and 8800 GVW front brake pads on 2500 2wds since both of ours (96 and 99) are 8800 GVW trucks. I see differences in some parts of the steering linkage, but I can't find what's different about the front pads. Are they simply 3500 units?? Thanks.
Looking at CAD drawings of the various brakes, I don't see a difference between the 2500's (8800) and the std. 3500 pads. I do see a difference in the 2500's 7500 and 8800 inner pads, though. The 7500 backing plates have 2 'ears' that locate it in the caliper while the 8800's have one solid plate in place of the 2 smaller ears. It sure looks stronger, but is that all?
I barelymanaged to get a set of 7500 calipers and new pads on my 8800. It was a royal pita that turned into a 4hr job. There may not be much noticeable diff but the inner spacing from caliper-to-pad-to- rotor is wider for a 8800 vs 7500. I know that if I had new rotors also, I would not be able to install the 7500 calipers, there's not enough room when fully compressed and new pads to slide it over the rotor for install. I thought the problem was faulty pads or calipers....lol. With new stainless lines the thing sure does stop good but I will be changing it out to the correct caliper. Hope this helps some one in the future.
Yea...I guess it could be possible. I can't return them but once these pads wear out I'm going to have to order the correct caliper as I won't be able to reinstall w/new pads....they just won't fit over the rotors.
