whats the diff.
hey guys, i bought a 3/4 ton chevy about 2 yrs ago and i think the motor finally laid down on me, so im back in the market for a truck and im also back in the market looking for cummins, i was just wondering...whats the difference between a cummins HO motor vs. a cummins "normal" motor, aside from adding a gear to the tranny is anything modified on the engine side or what...btw, heres a pic of my 3/4 chevy that just laid down on me

It was on the 24v engines, slightly different injection pump. Gave it 10hp/60tq (if memory serves me right on the numbers.)
If you are wanting to BOMB it the standard outputs seem to respond better to electronics, and the HOs seem to respond better to injectors and such. (Although they both work on either)

Now Im curious...why a 12 valve over 24....Im new here of course and Im going to pick up my brand new to me 2001 2500 6spd this afternoon. I cant wait!!! It has 97000 on the clock and I got it for 17500.

well...its a 98 and i dont think it says whether its a 12v or a 24v, unless you know by looking at the VIN #, but either way, 12v or 24v, its better than a 350 chevy with a knocking rod.....and i like the blue as well!

12v is all mechanical, including the fuel and injection pumps. Not as failure prone as the 24v. Plus easier to tinker with. Which is fun for me. Enjoy the truck, and welcome to DTR Lt.B.

well i talked to my boss today at work, and he called a good buddy of his that works at a dealership, and his buddy has an 01 2500, auto tranny, ext. cab short bed and leather with 130k miles
OR
he has one coming in the end of this week thats an 01 2500 HO motor with ONLY 31k miles on it, thats also an ext. cab short bed and it has the 6 spd manual, they will take 17.500 for this one and around 14 or 15 for the first one. Im really leaning toward the 6 spd if i were to get one of those two trucks.
***UPDATE*** i just ran an NADA guide on the 01 HO motor truck and it books at $24k. the other one with the auto. tranny books at $19,525
so in all truth, id be getting more off book price by buying the 6 spd truck over the auto.
