What to look for

I am sure this is somewhere but I could not find it. I am looking at my neighbors 97 or 98 2500 with 90k on it. What should I look for as far as obvious signs of failure, does the truck have any known frame issues? Does the fuel pump fail? How about the lift pump? I think all he does is change the oil. I need the truck to be reliable, he just wants a smaller truck, I want a monster!

Thanks I know this place is a great source of information.

I don't know much about that particular model, I do know that 90k is barely broken in. Is that documented? Does the pedal rubber look pretty new? It should with so few miles...Mark

90k is nothing if it's true. That thing should be pretty clean if he cared about it even a little. Even on the 98's it could have some electric issues so I would see if all the gauges work and see if he has any of the maintenance receipts. 98 with 90k is a real desired engine. If you get a good deal I'd probably pop on it because that thing could be turned into a monster.

So I looked, body was very clean. Issues were as follows, Low idle, a shade tree mechanic was there and said the throttle cable needed to be adjusted, although I am not buying it. The front axle is leaking, oil on the front of the engine, not sure from where, and oil on the pan and tranny pan. No leak from the transfer case and no AC. I was going to do a carfax, but I dont think that it would do anything just yet, before I verify the mileage since the car was bought in NY and is now in CT.

Was it a 97 or a 98?

World of difference, 98 could be a 24 valve, plus Interior is completely different.

Oil from engine could be as simple as a front seal, or as bad as a holed timing case from the KDP.
What did they want for it and what are the specs, 4X4, ext cab, auto/5 speed?

You might get more response if you put this in the 2nd gen. section too.

Not entirely impossible, my '99 has 76,530 miles on it. However, there are so many clues if a truck has an extra 100,000 miles on the odometer, you just have to look.

It was a 97 club cab. Was painted, but that doesn't really matter. I did a prelim carfax and it said it had 21 inquires, so I assume it changed hands a few times, and possibly went to a dealer a few times. I think Ill pass on it, even if its cheap, not worth it.
