vin # decoding?

I m in the search for a 98 12 valve, and have resorted to vin number checking....I was told that it was the 6th digit that was different....but I think that is incorrect.

1B7MF33D3WJ133287 = 12 valve.
1B7MF33W8WJ160213 = 24 valve

THESE ARE EXAMPLES....I think its the d that designates the 12 valve engine? Can anyone set me straight?
ALSO, what is the engine discription....? I ve seen dfi, mpfi, mfi dt or something? a few .....what are te letters?
Back to vins.....if you know any of them as it breaks down please speak up....

1B7MC33D5WJ140606 = is a 98 quad cab dually 12 valve.
that I m interested in.

Re:vin # decoding?

Save yourself a lot of grief and just look for an engine with 6 individual valve covers underneath a phony Dodge cap. The 12 valve engine also has an injection pump that is in-line, and exposed injectors on the exhaust side of the head. In-line means that all the injection pump pistons are in a row from front to back.

The 24 valve has a single large valve cover, concealed injectors, and a rotary pump with the injection lines all coming out the back in a circle.

RCW,
I don't think that will help him. I get the impression that he's searching for a truck online, and online ads seldom have an engine picture, but almost always have a VIN.

Chris

Re:vin # decoding?

Yea, I ve been searching online....dealers all think 98's are 24 valvers.... I have special needs....Im looking for a 98, 12 valve quad cab, duelly, 5 speed, 2wd.....

The vin info was perfect....

Ive found three in the US, one in boston, pretty beat up, needs tranny work, one in ok, and one in dallas. I ve got someone to go look at the one in ok, since theses dealers don t give ya a lot of hope on actually receiving good information....They treat you like, well if you don t want it no big deal the next will, so why should I tell ya anything about.....they don t seem to budge off price, and they won t even fill th etank for me....either....I guess demand is pretty good....

Re:vin # decoding?

My 98 12 valve has a VIN of 1B7MF33D6WJ136183. Hope this helps. There is a fellow in my area I deal with who is usually pretty good at locating exactly what you want. His name is Joey, Larue County Truck, (270-358-2200) I do not see where you are from, but maybe this will help.
Ed

Not Affiliated with above, just repeat customer)
