Vacuum pump oil leak
Vacuum pump oil leak
Recently had my 2000 2500 in the dealer for a failed lift pump and they told me that my vacuum pump was leaking oil. It didnt seem like a REAL BIG deal until they tried to tell me that the only fix was to replace the pump. HOLY COW!!!!! $1850.00 for a REMAN pump? There has got to be a way to just fix the oil leak. The pump itself operates fine. If not. I will just live with a leak for a while.........
Why??? you can fix it yourself for probably $10....
Heres the seal:

And the procedure:
https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...ht=vacuum+pump
If you do a search, youll probably find some additional info. Tell your dealer that youd rather fix it for $10, instead of handing them over $2k. I dont think Ive ever seen anybody post back and say the seal didnt fix the problem.
Now, take the ol lady out for dinner, you just saved a wack of cash !!!

You can go to the dealer and order part #05140342-AA. It will come up as a "seal kit". This part number coincides with TSB 09-009-04 from Mar 04. The TSB is for a "revised" vacuum pump seal kit.
The kit cost me $80 cdn. It comes with 2 o-rings, the Vacuum pump to engine gasket and the oil seal itself and even comes in a Cummins Original Parts bag. Now the oil seal is the fun part! After getting the kit, I went to my seal and bearing guy to see what I could get the seal for in the aftermarket. The part number on the seal comes up "internal use only" meaning you can't get it. It was made for someone and them only.
The seal is a funky looking thing. It is completely rubber and a semi hard like plastic, no metal at all. Even the seal guy went "whoa, that's bizarre".
Just for a comparison, from my seal guy, I got 2 regular seals and 2 of each of the o-rings for $15 cdn. The dealer kit is a little expensive but I think someone did their homework on the seal itself.
My dealer parts guy didn't even know about the "revised" kit. And he usually on the ball when it comes to the diesel stuff.
As for repair times, I haven't done my truck yet. It's just a minor leak anyways, no drips yet. But I just helped a buddy of mine do his truck and it took us 1 1/2 hours complete. I think doing it by myself, might take about 2 hours or so. It's a good time to flush the power steering and go synthetic while you have most of it drained anyways.
Hope it helps!
