Transfer popping

Anyone had any prblems with popping noises coming out of the transfer case when under a load (light)? My dad's 3500 transfer sounds terrible even when under a light load. Is the transfer gear or chain driven? I have looked in the TSB for problems but did not find any.

Re:Transfer popping

The manual recommends anytime the transfer case starts making noise to change the fluid right away. But being it's chain driven about the only thing I know a popping noise to be is the chain in the case.

Re:Transfer popping

The snap ring that holds the output shaft tight against the bearing could have broke. Only way to check is to pull the drive shaft off and see if the output shaft will move in and out.

Re:Transfer popping

OK I listened to the truck a little closer last night. I think the popping is coming from the front axel, but is it in the gears or the coupler?
