Trailer connector wiring

Hi everyone... my 7-pin connector from the factory was all busted up. It had a 4 pin and a 3 pin connector that connected to another 4 pin and 3 pin connector under the truck.

I got a new 7-pin connector today, and cut off the 4 and 3 pin connectors under the truck. The new 7-pin connector wires straight into the wiring under the truck.

I've searched DTR and looked around on google for help on what wire corresponds to what, but no luck.. Does anyone know what color wire corresponds to what function on my 1996?

Thanks!

Dennis

You have:

1) 12 volts constant power
2) Ground
3) Tailmarker lights
4) Left turn
5) Right turn
6) Trailer brakes
7) Reverse lights

If no one posts up the exact wire colors for you, get under there with a meter and start testing them. If you don't have a brake controller, you'll have two wires that have no power at all. Trailer brakes and ground. Check continuity, and you'll find your ground.

It's pretty easy to whittle the pile down once you get in there. Just label them or write it all down for future reference.

Thanks for the help, but no luck just yet . I'm down at my college now and don't have my multimeter with me. But I'm headed home this weekend so I'll just test it out there.

There were some weird colored wires... no white, yellow, or blue wires.

Are the four wires of a smaller gauge (meaning bigger wires, hope I used the correct term) for the lighting, and the 3 larger gauge wires (smaller, I hope ), for the brake controller? I do have a brake controller, its old though, came with the truck. No idea if it works.

Thanks again for the help.

I would assume that the smaller diameter wires are for tail markers, right turn, and left turn. Bigger diameter ones might be ground, 12 volt power, brakes, and backup lights.

Not sure. I'm guessing on this one.

You'll have to use a meter to be sure.
