Tracking Bar Question / Front end stuff

Greetings Friends,

I have a '99 QC3500 that is now a little loose up front. Found out that I need a new Tracking Bar, and 2 new Tie Rod Ends.

Will somebody chime in and let me know where the best place to buy these items may be?

I will be doing the work myself (installation) then taking it in for an alignment... I hope I can get this done in the next 2 weeks, so maybe I'll find a local store that carries the parts. I suppose for the right price I'll shop online.

Thanks for any input that you may have to offer me. I don't want to spend an arm and leg for the parts. A friend told me that I should be able to purchase a bar for around $170.

Cheers,

Pete

Re:Tracking Bar Question / Front end stuff

I have the Moog replacement trackbar with lifetime warranty on mine. It's usually available at a NAPA or Carquest store.

DT Products and Fabrication also makes one, phone #1-888-776-2403.

Some report success with a Luke's Link also, an adjustable joint for the trackbar end, and they're also available for tie rod ends.

Good luck! If you have wander, it'll help, but might not be the cure-all.

McGYVER:
just did my track bar with a lukes link. his unit will fit the tie rod ends also. i believe that they are 62 beans plus frieght, each now. easy to work with, and maybe your alignment may be the same as it was. dtt also has a replacement priece for the track bar, about the same price. don't know how it works. but johnny luke is great to work with, life time warrenty. replace the rod eye bushing also. and lock tite the bolt.

Marv.

(not associated with the above vendor)
just satisfied customer

Re:Tracking Bar Question / Front end stuff

i'm new here so still reading posts and learning. but as a new owner of a '94 cummins that steers like a ford with million miles i can tell u don't buy the cheap track bar. get the moog or do as the previous posts suggest.
my cheapo napa bar was either bad when i bought it or wore out within 3 days.
still pulls to right and has heavy steering but the axle doesn't move around anymore.
another question would be why is there a tie rod end on an axle locating bar?? ???

Re:Tracking Bar Question / Front end stuff

I would say to allow for up and down movement of the axle but there has got to be a better way.

Why not put the same hushing that is on the other end to make it stronger? That ball stud arrangement is the weak link obviously.

I highly recommend the DT track bar. I haven't had to touch it since I put it on and I am not easy on my truck at all.

Re:Tracking Bar Question / Front end stuff

what do u think is better about the DT track bar? and what is the full company name?
i'm seriously considering cutting the entire front suspension/axle out and putting in older D60/leaf springs like a truck should have, or selling it and buying wrecked cummins to swap into my my '77 power wagon.
my neighbor has fords and his super-duty has leafs and his 1/2tn has torsion bars. seems the auto makers just switch parts every 10 years or so to make some money.
would seem to me that track bar could have solid bushings on each end if the mounts were modifyed to have the bar horizontal, just like gm/ford did in pass. cars 20 yrs. ago.
any input on this idea??

I had also considered taking mine to the spring shop here in Richmond and having a real suspension put under it. Too many moving parts there now.

Re:Tracking Bar Question / Front end stuff

i will check that out, also i just looked at an '03 cummins and an '01 gas model and they both had a track bar with solid rubber bushings on each end. apparently sometime in '97-'98 dodge switched to this style bar. after looking it over i think it would be a simple bracket swap to upgrade.
also was looking at my truck with a friend and was turning the steering wheel while watching my drag-link and noticed that the steering arem attatched to the steering box is flexing. i didn't think a cast piece would do that, but it is easily seen that the arm is twisting. so i'm thinking aftermarket gear box, steering arm, late model track bar and see what happens.
