track bar problems - again

Just installed a new Moog made track bar from CarQuest last weekend and I think it's shot again (less than 300 miles). I noticed that the steering seemed to be jumping around more than the last time I drove it so I had my son turn the wheel back and forth, engine off and sure enough there is some play in it again.

So now I am thinking I might have put it on wrong. It seemed simple enough, take the old one off, put the new one on, torque to specs in manual, 70 for ball stud 130 for bolt. The parts guy "reminded" me to put a shot of grease in after I got it mounted so I did.

What did I do wrong or am I just lucky enough to have gotton a defective track bar?

I guess I'll be testing the "lifetime warranty" in the next day or two but don't want to repeat a mistake on my part.

Any insight or suggestions are greatly appreciated...

Thanks

Roy

Re:track bar problems - again

thanks for the reply Pit Bull, and I have one on the way, but the problem is the new track bar. The ball end has movement in it just like the old one, just not as bad.

It is not supposed to move, right?

I read somewhere that if there was more than .08 in then is needed replacing, and I would have to say it is moving between 1/16 and 1/8 in and out..

RoyB

The ball end should have no movement. My 2 cents on this is, a LukesLink is the solution. They are about 60 bucks and the 2 I've used worked as advertised. Luke is also very helpful and professional on the pnhone and guarantees his product will work.

Hope this helps.
Re:track bar problems - again

im on my second trac bar and i put a lukes link kit on and it didnt help at all im not saying its a bad product or anything just didnt help me in my situation. i cant go very fast around a corner without the truck jumping into the other lane and having both hands on the wheel! so i went and ordered a DT trac bar and a darins steering brace!! that better do the trick or in the market for a new truck!!! cant stand to drive it anymore the way it is!

Re:track bar problems - again

I'll tell ya,

for me, the lukes link helped my side to side handeling, but I have big problems with my steering play and wandering when I hit certain aspects of a road. Like a groove or certain bump.

I also have a shake at high speeds. When I get up the $$, I am going to get a new steering box and try the darin steering stabilizer. I might even just replace the whole front end (everything). I love my truck and I don't want another.

I do get angry at it when it wanders. If I hit a deep puddle the truck has a mind of its own and the tires go steering by themselves. My steering wheel has so much play that its too late to steer away. That gets me mad.

LOL,

ok, I rotated my tires and my shake went away. I'm glad I didn't replace the whole front end.

Re:track bar problems - again

Mine is driving me crazy too. Steering is loose and is driving me crazy. But What really suck is the death wobble. God. I just installed another new track bar and has not fixed it yet. I am so sick of it shaking the hell out of the truck, myself, and my passengers. It is going to be intresting. I will tell you what it is when or if i find it. I might be trying that Darins Steering stabilizer. -Anthony

Re:track bar problems - again

Well, it's been a while since I posted this, and I have been busy. I replaced my track bar (no probem getting the replacement at least) and it drove pretty good. Ok, since I got that all fixed I guess Ibetter have the tires rotated and balanced. BAD move! Anyone that has driven a rough gravel road at 45 mph will know exactly how my truck drove after the rotation and balance, from anything over 50 mpg to over 75mph it would only get worse. Took it back, they tried again, took them 3 hrs to road force balance all 6 tires, no improvement. Ordered a complete new set of 6 tires, no improvment. Dealer offered to get a set of Toyo tires in and try them, shake is now gone, but my I think my track bar is gone again

At least he gave me full credit on the first set of tires, then agian they only had about 5000 interstate miles on them.

I am about to try the DT bar and give this MOOG back to the parts guy.

Anyone put a DT bar on a 2001 3500 4x4?

Roy
