Tie rod upgrade

ok i decided to get rid of the inverted Y and ordered the 2009 HD steering from dodge, i forgot to buy the nuts and i see it did come assembled but without tie rod nuts, does anyone know the size and pitch for the nuts

here is what i ordered http://oemmoparonline.com/catalog/pr...ducts_id=78739

think it is a good ide to drill holes int he tie rods to add grease fittings? I hate not being able to grease parts

Check the knuckle for proper fitment. You might have to use a reamer tool on them. Nut should be that same size as the OEM stocker.

I agree with not being happy about not being able to grease but I worry more about leaving shavings in the joint or nicking the ball with the drill. If you could completely disassemble then I would say go for it a put in a grease nipple but since you can't do that on any of the new joints I've seen in years and years I would leave it alone. Better to figure on replacing it in 4 or 5 years then to possibly not have to for 10 yrs but risk having to change it in less than a year.

I'd be interested in seeing how this upgrade goes. I would like to do the same, just not sure if the parts will fit. I think they should. Mine is a 2001 2500.
Please keep us posted Tom.
Thanks
jack

the other thread i had read the guy had the same 4x4 2001 3500 as me and said this part # fits perfect and he measured and checked the tapers and they were the same

Tom, what about the pitman arm, do it have to be changed or does the original one work? Did you order the dampener too?
Thanks for your help. Would nice to get the truck so I can drive down the road.

I had the 98-99HD set up on my 01, its a T set up and proven to work, its not as massive as the 08 stuff, (do a search as the 08 tre have issues if not installed correctly)

here is a link to doing the older set up, oh yeah the 99HD stuff has grease nipples

You could use lock washers, loctite or what I have done many times over the years. The old single cylinder motorcycle riders trick of using a dab of silicone seal on the threads after the nut is tightened. Never had a nut come loose doing that, comes off easy with a wrench and usually have some around with no looking for the right nut or washer.

nuts came from mcmaster carr yesterday i will try to get this done this weekend but it is not high on my list as the truck sits alot

i would post a link to the thread where the guy did the 01 dually with the 09 front end but it was on another forum and can't recall where, was also full of pics, he did slightly grind above the threaded part for fear of wheel clearance with the 16" bud wheel but ended up not realy needing it

here is a link to the other thread about the same thing https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...=1#post3054646

i drove her yesterday and while she is 100% better i think the problem is only 90% fixed still wandering some, at this point either my lifetime warranty trackbar is bad after 20k miles or the trailing arm bushings are beat, think i am at 210,000 miles I will try to get pics later

Don't know if anyone else has had an issue but my upgraded new from mopar steering broke a few weeks ago, I was making a k turn and the drivers tie rod broke off at the knuckle, fell and jam bed between the rotor and wheel

It was headed, no signs of rust just snapped off ***, and I barley drive the truck, have not hit a curb
