testing the fuel guage?
testing the fuel guage?
Hello all
Recently replaced sending unit on my 1996, still shows 1/2 tank when full. Old sending unit showed 1/4 so new one is better, but still has issue. Grounding out plug by jumping the sending unit connector, guage goes to full, not past but right to F. Should the needle pass the F when grounded? What other tests can I do for guage? What voltage should I have at tank connector? Ihave about 8 volts-ish.
Thanks all
Eric

sounds like you have a corroded wire inside the insulation or you have a connector(s) that are not making good contact check your sending unit connector for corrosion and good contact also get to the back of the cluster and see if the connection is dirty or loose check your voltages and ohms at both the gauge and the sender as well with them plugged in. there may be more than two connections so follow the circuit best you can to make sure
the sending unit varies the ground. the best way to test it wud be to take it out again and move the float up and down while taking a reading at the sending unit and then again at the gauge via a helper to move the sender float. at empty you shud be near 8 volts at full you shud be near 0.
