Tag lights melted

Got pulled over last night for my tag light being out. So this morning I went to the autoparts store to get some new bulbs for them. Once I got home to put them in I noticed that both sides had melted the housing they were in and fell out of the hole hanging just below the bed in the bumper. I noticed that they had a connector a few inches away, so I unplugged it and went to a junk yard to get two new/used ones. I noticed that ever single truck either didn't have the light assembly at all or they were melted just like mine. Has anybody else noticed this? And what did you do to fix it? Ken

the easiest way is to go to the dealer and get new ones. I have not seen any other way to fix it.

Funny you say that because the sticker is still on there. I ended up buying a tag bracket with some led's on it for $8 from autozone. Two wires and was done in ten minutes. But I don't like the holes that get left from the old lights not being there so i'll go and get some factory replacement wire/sockets on monday.

Here is my permanent license light fix. You can get these lights at Autozone in the Help! section I think (been awhile since I bought them there)

You'll need a hole saw to cut the holes out bigger to put them in.

Light years ahead of the cheezy dodge lights.

I just put an LED into the transparent part of the housing and filled the space with a clear epoxy. Soldered the stock connector to the wires from the LED and was done. Stock looks, cheap and seems to hold up well.

I've never seen a stock light that lasts. Look where they are located, they get the absolute worst of all the road debris and all the elements.

Keep in mind also that with the factory units you have a bulb thats sealed and even though small they do create some heat and melt over time.I have many types of fixes from LED's installed to what 95black2615 has done. While his are the neatest his with the larger bulbs and metal frames will causes heat issues with the plate valance panel and met it instead of the wiring like the factory ones. The best one I had seen was a owner who utilized two small 3/4 inch LED's for his plate lights. The LED's would stay cool enough to mount in the factory valance panel and not cause heat or melting distortion.......Andy

P.S.-IF you decided to go to Ma Mopar for new factory units then make sure you take both of them with you or the part number tag. There are two different types and they are not interchangeable as I found out the hard way,go figure.I paid $15/each for both of mine and figure that if I got 170k out of my first set this set would either last me until I install and roll pan or sell the truck.

I had to replace the right one when I first got my truck, and just a couple weeks ago, I had to replace my left one. They just don't hold up. They either melt, or the rubber socket actually gets hard and brittle and just breaks off. I got both of mine from the dealer for $12 a piece.
