stuck caliper?
stuck caliper?
I've noticed lately that my truck will pull to the right a little when hard braking. I would surmise that this means the left side is stuck, thus the right side is doing most of the work. is there any way I can free it up? Or am i stuck with having to get a new one? TIA
Re:stuck caliper?
my truck did this and i found one rear brake wasn't setting up resulting in a pull to the side that was setting up tighter than the other. check your left brake for not tightening
Re:stuck caliper?
If it is only a little pull then you are probably having rear brake problems, not front disc. If a caliper gets stuck up front you will have more than a little pull

Check the left rear for adjustment - if it is too loose then the right rear will tug the truck to the right. See if it feels like the rear is squatting on the right and lifting on the left under max braking. Either way, adjust both drums and the parking brake while you are at it.

Re:stuck caliper?
Well I say slight pull because it only does it under hard braking. Under normal conditions it's barely noticeable, but if i slam on the brakes, it pulls pretty hard. I'll have a look at it all this weekend. Thanks for the advice guys.
Re:stuck caliper?
What if you've got 4 wheel disc all the way around. One of my front calipers is rubbing but I can't tell if it's hanging or it needs new pads (just replaced the pads 10,000 miles ago if that :'(). Something is rubbing up front with the brakes. But only when I turn. Most of the time. My friend had this problem but that's because he burned out his clutch packs in his LSD and the axle had some free play in it.

Tx-Ram
I would say you need to adjust up the rear shoes on one side. I get the same thing so I always do the adjustment at every oil change (5K). Right rear will be ok but Left rear is always out 10-15 clicks everytime. I have tried the back up method with little success.
Re:stuck caliper?
THe slack adjusters on the rears are notorious for being frozen. THe advice you have been given about the rears is good. However, I'd also check the other side. You may have to dismantel the adjusters, clean and lube them to get em working right.

Hardest part of the job may be getting the rear drum off. They can get your patience thin, but they will come off.

I had problems with my truck pulling to the right but it was actually the right front caliper sticking
. I replaced the caliper and it has since solved my problem... Knock on wood :
. If your pads (right front)are wearing out unusually fast it is probably your caliper but if not your best bet is you rear brakes on the oposite side.
Wheels

Re:stuck caliper?
Been through all of this myself. I had a little pull to the right and hoped it was rear brake adjustment. I HAVE had good luck with backing up and hitting the brakes hard, so that's how I adjusted my rear brakes. It did change the pulling from one side to pulling a little one direction and/or then the other, depending on pedal pressure. I couldn't imagine what could be going on since I just put pads on it about 7K ago and the calipers seemed fine then.

Finally, I heard the brake wear indicator sqealing on the LEFT side, even though most of my pulling problems were to the right.
