Steering Wheel Wrap?

I have a leather wrapped steering wheel. I have worn a hole in the leather where my palm pivots. It looks like there is another fully wrapped covering on the steering wheel that I can see through the hole in the leather. Is this correct? Can I just cut the leather wrapping away and have (essentially) a new steering wheel underneath?
I'd just leave it alone but it's starting to disintegrate, and every time I put my hands on it they come away with a black smudge.
I guess the alternative would be to cover the whole thing with another cover.

So can I hack away the leather or do I have to cover it?

You can cut the old leather wrapping off the steering wheel, but you will be left with the under wheel covering that is just some sort of slick plastic.
I would leave what you have on there as long as you can, then either replace the steering wheel with another used one that is better of get a new leather wrap from a place like Geno's Garage and re wrap it.

I put this one on mine

It was a tight fit but once I got it on and laced it looks seamless. And for 6 bucks it's the best buy I've made in a long time.

Did you take the old one off first?

So I removed it and underneath is a molded rubber wheel with finger grips etc.
Works fine for me
