Steering gear leak!

I have a leak at the steering gear box; it is at the bottom shaft that goes to the steering linkage. Has any one had this problem? I checked the four bolt's up top and they are tight, Cleaned it off real good and drove it around and it is leaking there Is there a seal I can get? Checked the price of a new gearbox and said no thank you, Not today! Might have to go to a stop leak to keep any thing in there for more than a week!

Are you sure it is not just oil coming out of the crankcase vent hose? Mine leaks all over the steering box giving the impression that the steering box is leaking.

Re:Steering gear leak!

Yes, my son had this problem with his old 96 as well as a neighbor. The dealer told us it had to be replaced entirely at a cost of $900. So I went to our local garage and the guy there said so sweat. You just replace the seal. The seal is up inside the box housing and can't be pryed out. So what he did was to drill 2 small holes on opposite sides of the seal, then screw in 2 small, but long sheet metal screws unitil they bound up. Then he was able to yank on the screws to pull the old seal out. I think he said the seal kit is like 10 bucks and labor was 2 hours and that's why Dodge doesn't like to fix 'em.

Tom

Re:Steering gear leak!

Mr. 45,
I just had to replace my hydro-boost hose last Monday. I lost a lot of fluid, and when I crawled under the truck it looked like the gearbox had sprung a leak. I had someone turn the wheels with the truch running, and found the hose had split where it goes into the gearbox. Replaced the hose and all is dry. Have a look at that before you go looking to replace the gearbox.

Re:Steering gear leak!

Wow, 169.00 sound really fair for a new box, even a rebuilt one. Where did you get it from? Thanks, Kevin

Re:Steering gear leak!

I got the box from Parts America No problems yet. I also put on a oil cooler to keep the fluid nice and cool 8)
