Question Starter problems

Well, My 11 year old starter is finally starting (no pun) to give me trouble. I think it must have something like a "dead spot". Usually when it's warm I have no trouble, but in the morning or after work a lot of times when I turn the key I hear 1 click from the relay or solenoid and nothing happens. May have to turn the key off and on 5 or 6 times, then it cranks up just fine with plenty of starting power. Do I need to replace the whole starter, or I notice this starter has replaceable brushes. Will maybe new brushes and a new solenoid fix me up ? How long do I have before I am stranded ???

Go here. Get the contact and plunger kit to rework starter. As long as all else is good in starter this should help you out.

Mine was doing the same thing, found a good site that was very helpful
fixinrams.com . Pete has been a great help and has some good tips too. He sells stuff on ebay also, the starter kit came with a CD that will walk you thru the job too.

I like the fixinrams.com stuff too. I ordered the starter kit and the vaccum pump rebuild kit.
Great stuff and great directions.

I alway tryto keep my oem parts starter included. Solenoid contacts are easy. The local rebuilder will fix anything else for a small(er) fee than poor quality remans & much less than new OEM.

I have repaired several of these solinoids with just new contacts. The plunger should be cleaned carefully, at the end of the little spring is a round steel ball don't drop it . The brass circle on the plunger can be cleaned carefully if it isn't burnt too bad. Put a little grease on the spring when reassembling. I buy my contacts at a local rebuild shop. Hardest part of job is the top mounting bolt, I use a stubby wrench to take out first before loosening the bottom ones. good luck.

I just replaced my starter solenoid contacts yesterday. Took just alittle over 1 hour. The 12 point 10mm rachet wrench with no off set worked great, even on the top bolt. The kit was from fosters truck and it also included a new contact plunger.

The only downside is that I wished I had replaced them sooner, very basic wrenching.
