sport headlight
Okay, I know there have been posts on sport headlight conversions, but I'm either doing searches wrong, or just can't find them. What I'd like to know is, what's involved in mounting the headlight assemblies? I'm not worried about the wiring, just the actual mounting. Will the sport lights use the original SLT brackets, and original turn signals? If someone has changed over and can shed some light, or post a 'how-to' link would be appreciated!
Re:sport headlight
fitzer,

When you buy the Sport headlights they are complete units. They come with lights, buckets, corner lights even headlight bulbs. The SLT and Sport corner lights do not interchange.

The install is quite easy. You simply unbolt the SLT assembly and bolt in the Sport assembly. I think there are 3 bolts per side. There is no need to remove the headlight from the bucket. Just remove the whole assembly. On some older trucks it requires some minor sheetmetal surgery, but yours is a 2001 and won't require any modification.

You'll be happy with this mod. ;D

Try www.importvision.com Best prices I've found.

Re:sport headlight
The sport headlites use 2 bulbs per side. Much improved light. But what I was liking to know was, if I cheaped out, and picked up a couple assemblies from a wrecker, would I need brackets and corner lights from the sport, or will my SLT ones fit?

Re:sport headlight
The existing wiring will have to be 'adjusted'! Splicing into the existing high beam circuit, wiring to new relays, etc. But from what I've heard and read, it's worth the time and effort. Only makes sense that 4 high beam bulbs would light up the road better than 2. There's also a way of wiring the low beams so that they will stay on during high beam use. Guys say they've done it, and not had headlight meltdown, but I've never met up with one yet to see how it's done, or how they work.
Re:sport headlight
fitzer,
Sport corner light will not interchange with SLT and vice-versa. The mounting tabs are different ot each type of light. SLT corners only mount on SLT headlights, and Sport on Sport. If you get the Sport lights from the wrecker just buy the whole assembly.

Stamey,
The SLT and Sport wiring are different. It does require some 'customizing'. If you want to spend the extra money you can buy direct plug in harnesses so you don't disrupt the factory wiring. Or you can rewire it yourself.

Nathan
SUV Lights sells some ready-made harnesses as well as individual harness components. Import Vision Motorsports sell the after-market Depo brand for $210/pair. The weak part of the Depo's (after six months) is the headlamp-to-grille welt. I put the OEM welt back on the truck after the welt included with the Depo's developed cracks.

I have yet to experience meltdown running all eight bulb filaments on high beam. The increased light output to the front—460 watts vs. the original 130 watts of the stock SLT lamps—must be seen to be appreciated.

The lamps are powered with a harness using 12 gauge wire and relays. WOW

Thanks for explaining all this to me. I'm gonna look into this myself. I prefer not to cut any wires if at all possible (just another place to have a problem with corrosion down the road), so I am glad that someone offers a harness I can purchase to put in there.

Thanks,
Chris

I noticed that the Sport headlights on my truck were much better than the ones on my Dad's SLT after I bought it. I didn't know it before I bought the truck, but I knew that I wanted the Sport front end because of the different look that came out on the 99. ;D Now if the third gen front end would just start growin on me a little faster,,,, :

Re:sport headlight
I have a sport and the lighting from the factory is way better than the SLT's. But if I could get the all to work at the same time without a meltdown, that would be even better. Did you guys wire it yourselves? and if so do you have a schematic? Or did you use a brite box?

Re:sport headlight
StakeMan - the OEM sport Rams have no connection to the inboard (9004) low beam filament. The BriteBox will only light six filaments. I wired mine to suit my situation. The diagram is attached. Note that my wiring is on a non-sport truck. The attachment to an OEM sport harness would be different.
Be aware that the reflector for the inboard bulbs is not designed to have the low beam filament lit. When aiming the lamps I disconnected the inboard lamps and used the outboard low beams only. As mine are wired, all four low beam filaments are on when the in-cab beam selector is in the low beam position. I have yet to have oncoming traffic 'flash' me when I use low beams
