Speedometer recalculation

Hey, my buddy has an 01 Dodge 2500 Cummins with an Auto. He just put 295/75R16's BFG All Terrains, and would like to get the speedo corrected. Any idea on when/how/where to get it fixed so the overhead reads correctly and the speedo is normal? Can the dealership recal the speedo? How much would it cost? Thanks for any advice. Scotty

Yes, the dealer can do it. The price depends on the dealer, as I've been quoted from $80 to $125. I don't have the overhead and still have not had it done.

Why not spend the money on a Superchip programmer and you can improve performance and recalibrate the speedo whenever you want. You can usually find a good price on eBay. Worked for me,

.....do we really want to discuss this again? Unless a tech has played around with the tone wheel and Rev per mile data in the ABS module, they will NOT know how to do this. Technically dealer techs are NOT to manipulate this data as it's an emisions violation (no crapola!!). NO WHERE in a service manual will you see any instruction or info pertaining to this. TECH LINE WILL NOT HELP as you are changing the vehicle from stock. That said there are techs that know how to perform this change and the method seems to change from year to year. I've found the best way is to use a GPS and road test the vehicle and make the necessary changes to net the best results.

96's use a vehicle speed sensor (VSS unit) located on the side of the transfer case (4x4) or tranny (2wd). This sensor is mounted into a black plastic adapter that mounts to the transfer case. Remove the adapter/sensor and the gear will come out with it. Don't twist it when removing the adapter or you'll probably cut the o-ring. The gears come in different number of teeth counts (tooth count is molded into the gear and they are color coded). Put the new gear on (it snaps in place) the adapter and re-install without twisting it. Note that depending on the tooth count your changing from and going to, the adapter may be "clocked" in a different position.

I have heard that some tire shops know how to do this. It would be worth a check, and they probably wouldn't charge as much.

Yes the dealer is the only one who can do it! find out the revs per mile the tire will make, on the tire website. With the OBD go into the ABS menu and tire size then other then pinion factor remember this #, change pinion factor to the number you have from the tire website then save. Have the tech rechech the number to make sure it was saved. While your there have your 3 cylinder idle enabled if needed.
It's very easy if the tech knows how! He did 2 trucks in 5 mins. No charge! Just caught them on a slow day. Normal charge is 1/2 hr. labor.
