Speedo was WAY off!!

Just went and got my speedo recorded at a local shop ($42)..

I am running 235/85-16's, but they don't account for even half the error...

indicated 25, really 30.
indicated 34, really 40.
indicated 42, really 50.
indicated 50, really 60.
indicated 58, really 70.

So, is my math right that I'm about 20% off at 60? (This would mean that I can go up 20% on my MPG figures??)

I'm pretty happy too, as I got a ticket for a 71 in a 55 on my way home from buying the truck... I knew I was going a little bit over, but didn't think I was above 60... and I wasn't, according to the speedo! This should get me out of the ticket nicely.

Yaaaaay!

Ya. I'd definately bring that up in court. Don't forget to mention that you bought the truck used. You might want to have the plastic gear replaced just in case that's the culprit.

I got out of a ticket that way twice but lost in the end. I was pulled over on the interstate for going 75 back when the speed limit everywhere was 55. Told the cop it must be my oversized tires, that my speedo only read 65. He was understanding and wrote me up for 65. Went to court with the same story, except said my speedo read 55. Judge was cool and said everybody goes 65 on the interstate, dropped the ticket. I left court to find a parking ticket on my truck that was $20 more than the speeding ticket.
Guess that's what I get for lying.

i doubt if that's enough to get you off completely, I've never heard of a state law that even requires a speedometer in a vehicle. but good luck anyway

Oh, I'm good to go with it being off this much... I got the impression from talking to the DA that they don't like the Trooper's tactics very much in that area...

Infidel - I could care less about the fines... (not that I'm wealthy, FAR from it).. It's the rise in insurance that will kill ya over the long haul. Since I had my previous truck stolen and not recovered, that's one big claim, and I also have a little 1 insurance point accident too.

When I was living in Germany, I got tickets in the mail frequently... Paid them and moved on, insurance there doesn't care. 71 in a 55 here is enough to raise your rates by 50%...

If you have a licensed teenager in your house it can go up 300% in NC no matter who got the ticket, that is if you have a vehicle with a lein that requires collision insurance etc.
Eskimo you'd better contact the DA and ask if you should get the speedo fixed before going to court, the judge may ask. If you say no, the judge could burn you a blister. Just saying, "I will adjust my driving to 12 MPH less than the display" may not weigh much with the judge. Just my $.02.

Not going to court... faxing the ticket and the speedo sheet to the judge, and it's dropped.

In that case it's good to be you! Congratulations man!
Any idea why the speedo is off; what it takes to fix it?

It's off because it's a Dodge, and my tires are slightly oversized.

There are products put out by Dakota Digital, one by another mfg. called "Tru Speed", the abbott e.r.a., and others I'm sure that intercept the signal from the VSS and change the pulses to whatever you set.

I've only personally used the Dakota digital one, and we drove on the highway with a GPS and adjusted it until the 2 read the same.

What brand of GPS are you using? I've curious about them but never shopped specifics. Do you recommend one over another?

Yeah, I figure at an indicated 70, I'm really doing around 84... and still getting 16mpg!!! I really wondered why everyone in Texas did exactly 70mph... now I know!

And we wonder why he needed an ATS tranny on a stock truck.. :P

I'm actually having a ball with it.. On our NC board, I posted about the problems I've had, and what it took to fix 'em... http://www.nc4x4.com/messageboard/viewtopic.php?t=9036 if you wanna read about what all you'd be doing right now..

Still 2 oil leaks that are bugging me... one looks like a rear main , the other one I haven't pinpointed, it's up front somewhere, but not bad. It's staining up my formerly white concrete driveway

I also found a set of heated leather seats for $600.. But that's BOMBing money!!

I wouldn't necessarily blame it on the fact that the truck is a Dodge. My 2002 (albeit with stock size tires) speedometer is within 0.5 MPH of my Garmin Streetpilot 2620 GPS at 70 MPH.
