Search for the SQUEAK!
Re:Search for the SQUEAK!
I had a squeak in my 98. Smooth road going straight. Curves on rough roads. Didn't matter. Drove me crazy.
One day while changing the fuel filter, I dumped diesel all over the steering linkage ujoints up by the firewall.
The squeak disappeared. After that, I used WD40 on the joints at every oil change and the squeak never returned.

mine had a squeak in the cab,i sprayed gel lube on the trans. linkage and the pivot arm linkage for the t-case,and in the grommet the support arm for the exhaust goes thru,it stopped the squeak completely.allthough i did it all at once and dont know which spot actually fixed it.i wish you luck as those squeaks can drive you nuts.
Finally found mine.
It was caused by the wire loom going to the hood light being pinched against the cab by the hood hinge. It rubbed a pretty good set of groves through the paint and into the cab corner steel. I had to cut the plastic loom holder to get it rerouted, now there is no squeak. But I got a new rattle that is bugging me, it is under the dash knee pad somewhere as far as I can tell.
The very annoying hard to pin down squeak on mine came from a source I just couldn't believe. The aluminum VIN tag on the dash at the base of the windshield! Part of a matchbook cover under it and problem solved. I have since helped others trace down squeaks and the tag has been the source several times.
Another squeek source...
When at the dealership a couple weeks ago trying to get my steering feel improved, I took a ride with the shop foreman. On the drive, he happened to mention a problem with a squeek coming from the drivers side a-pillar area usually noticed when turning. He said it was caused by the intermediate steering shaft. Said it took them a LONG time to figure that one out.
Funny thing was... I had the squeek when turning. So since I was under warranty still (35,000 miles), they replaced it... NO MORE SQUEEK and as a bonus, it improved my steering feel.

I've got an annoying squeak too, and it only does it on bumpy, eneven roads, and only once the cab warms up inside. It seems like it's coming from where the ds door meete the quad cab door by the top. I've cleaned, siliconed, tranny fluid, everything I can think of around the whole area. Only thing I've done to make it stop it to (at low speed) open the ds door.....then it stops. Close the door tight again, and it's baaaaaaack.
Straight pipe and loud stereo does help though !

A friend of mine and myself both have 01' dodges and they both have the "squeak" you speak about. On both of our trucks it turned out to be the same exact thing, the transmission shift linkage. Keep in mind that our trucks are automatic, and they both started after just a couple thousand miles. The part that causes the squeaking sounds were the joints at both ends of the linkage. These joints consist of a metal ball style knuckle (male half) and fits into a nylon coated socket (female end) which apparently just needs a good shot of lubrication every now and then. This pieces are at both ends of the shift linkage which are located underneath the truck on the drivers side. Just doing the lower joint didn't quite fix it with my truck so I would recommend that if you waste the energy to try and fix it do both ends. I have used W-D40 and other lubricants that have worked, but I think the main thing is having the aerosol pressure to get the stuff up into the joint. After applying it to both ends I usually climb out from under the truck and bounce up and down on my nerf bars to simulate any kind of moving action in the linkage that I can create. It usually takes two or three tries but its always well worth the time and effort. I am one that will tear the dash out of my rig to try and fix that annoying squeak!

Not only do I have an annoying squeak coming from somewhere in my dash, I also have a rattle coming from the panel below the steering column. And now, I've got a squeak outside the truck somewhere. Thank god for sound systems and straight pipes.
I started getting a "squeak" while on the highway thumping along at 80-85 mph. It drove me nuts because I had read all of the posts to others "squeakers". I had a buddy riding shotgun a week later while heading to south Texas on a hunting trip and it "raised is squeaking head" again. My bud started listening all around the cab and finally noticed the hood doing a small shimmy near the passenger side hinge area. We pulled over and I adjusted the bumper it rides on just a tad. Got back in and up to speed and the squeak had vanished. I would have never seen the hood shimmy from my vantage point of the drivers seat.
I bought my bud a 12er of his favorite adult barley pop, and we celebrated by polishing them off once we got to hunting destination.
