Rust

I bought my truck a few months ago and it came from Virgina Beach, Virgina. The owner before that lived in New York so it has rust on it, being the 3rd owner on it now I live in AZ, but I will get to the piont how do I battle this rust. It seems every where I look when working on the truck there is rust, frame under the hood and so on. What can I do to get rid of it or should I worry about it?

If you have the time and patience, you can paint over it with POR-15 paint to slow it down. www.por-15.com The standard Rust Preventitive Paint works awesome on surface rust. You just have to make sure there is no scaling before you paint it.

Is the rust just surface rust, or is it starting to eat through the metal? If it has progressed to becoming holes, then its just going to keep spreading. A good comparison is to think of rust like cancer. Once its there, you might be able to postpone it, but unless its caught very early, its going to get worse until there is nothing left of the truck. You have to remember though, thats coming from someone who lives in northern N.H. I don't know what the outcome will be for a truck that was moved to the southwest.

That POR15 is some great stuff, just don't get it on your hands unless you really like to wear the color!

Every time I get done painting with it, I swear that I'll use gloves next time...but I never do. I end up with black fingers for 2-3 weeks until it finally comes off with my skin. AWESOME stuff. And yes, I meant flaking rust. As long as nothing is loose, it will bond on. The rust on my truck is perfect to put it over: http://www.nhautofab.com/4x4site/ram20.jpg I got very lucky...that truck came from Mass. We can't find anything that looks like that underneath up here in northern N.H.!

When we lived up north my wife would hate me when I would put our "good" car away for the winter and buy some pos to bomb around in during the winter. Sure saved the car though.
