Rear wheel seal leaking

My rear wheel seal is leaking on my 1998.5 dodge 2500, it only has 88,000 miles on it and i am wondering if i need to replace both sides or just the one that is leaking. also do i need to replace the bearings also. i have never delt with rear seals or bearings before and just want to make sure i do it right.
Thanks for any help,
Joe

First of all make sure the differential isn't overfull, this will make them leak even though the the seal is fine. Factory spec is 1/2" below the bottom of the fill hole.
Also check the vent, if it's clogged the axle end can leak when the fluid warms and expands.

Replacing the seal is very easy, only the leaking side needs be done. Seal is less than $10 from the autoparts but you will also need a 2-9/16" socket to remove the axle.

No need to replace the bearings but if your brake shoes are oil soaked they will need to be replaced. Best to replace both sides at the same time.

I agree with changing both sides. I changed my left seal about a year ago and now my right one is leaking. If you are going to drain the fluid, might as well do both. If only doing one side, you can jack that side up and change the seal without losing much fluid. I am looking to do my leaking side this weekend.

For what it's worth, my dad's 01 started leaking around the seal. 600 dollars later and a "speed-seal", it's fixed. His housing AROUND the seal started to rust out apparently.

Just some food for thought if the housing where the seal sits looked a little rough.

Once you have gear oil on the shoes you pretty much have to replace them
