Rear Drum Brake Adjustment Problem
Rear Drum Brake Adjustment Problem
How do you adjust rear drum brakes when you have a limited slip differential? If I jack up both rear wheels and put the transfer case in neutral I can tighten the rear brakes and turn each wheel to feel the drag to tell how I am doing, but I suspect that I am feeling the drag from both rear wheels and so I am not sure how I gauge the adjustment on an individual wheel. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
The second wheel you adjust will be harder to turn than the first due to the LSD.
Just listen to the sound of rubbing from the wheel you are adjusting rather than how hard it is to spin. As soon as you hear the shoes rubbing stop, no need to back off on the adjustment, the first time you use the brakes the shoes will center and the rubbing will cease.
I've found the self adjusters are more likely to work if you apply the parking brake while going in reverse rather than the regular brakes. Speed makes no difference in self adjusting, what is important is that you come to a complete stop with the brake applied.

When I adjust mine I just move it the little bit where there is slack, before the other wheel starts moving. I can usually tell, because if the wheels still spins it isn't tight enough yet. Once the wheel stops spinning I back it off until I can move the wheel again.
