Rear brake drum problem.

I'm in the process of trying to inspect the rear brakes on my 93 W350 DRW. I have removed the spindle nut and outer bearing and the drum will not come off. I have beat the drum from all angles for an hour and haven't had any luck. Is there anything I am missing or should I just hit harder with a bigger hammer. haha.

Thanks.

Back the adjusters off ALL THE WAY and rock the drum a little to center the shoes. They do tend to hang up a bit. Be careful not to tear the bearing seals up on the spindle threads.

On my 2nd gen, remove rear wheels, put two lug nuts back on, start truck, spin rear end slowly and jam on the brakes. They broke loose so easily it made me smile.

Great trick , ... I'd have to put my axle back in for this to work, oh, ... and I guess both rear wheels should be up in case there's drag in the diff, or posi-traction

Your wheel seals are different for the dually than all the other 1st gens. Napa, CarQuest, and Advanced Auto all turned up the 2.80" wheel seal for me which is for the SRW trucks. You will need the 3.00" wheel seal for the dually.

FYI, it was DOUBLE the price for the big wheel seal at Napa vs. the normal seals ($32 vs $16!!) It was $13 at Advanced auto!

I believe the magic word they are looking for is "Other than 9,000lb axle" on their selection sheet.

Thanks for the help. I finally got them off after backing the adjusters off. The drums were pretty much trashed due to a previous owner letting the shoes wear deep ridges into the drums. So, I ended up putting it back together with new drums, shoes, and wheel seals. However, the drums are getting very hot after just a short drive. I had the brakes adjusted where the pedal felt good, but they seemed to bed getting too hot. I backed the adjusters off a few clicks and the pedal wasn't as good as before and the drums are still getting too hot. Any suggestions???

The rear brake adjustment is very important for the mental well-being of these brakes. Make sure that the parking brake cable is loose, turn wheel and adjust brakes until they drag a little, pump the brakes a few times to center everything, back off the adjuster until the don't (or barely) drag and repeat, always repeat...I found that I had to do this 2 or 3 times to get them right, then adjust the parking brake...Mark

Yeah 3 big screwdrivers, a small sledge and a crowbar work wonders for prying drums over brakes. Really bad thing is that side is fine now but the other side seal lip was f'ed and now the seal leaks
