Re:rattlin 4wd shifter
I'll give ya my 2 cents! My 6spd shifter did the same thing from new. I initially thought it was gear clatter, because it sounded that deep. What I found was the nut in the shifter **** was loose and rattling away. The **** is threaded onto the shaft, and then locked with a locknut. Try popping out the center plastic piece on your shifter, with a small eyeglass screwdriver type thing, then check the nut. My bet is it's loose. If not, disregard the above!!
Re:rattlin 4wd shifter
There is a spring on the T-case shifter that will lose it's tension and cause this.
Remove boot and tighten the tension on this spring and it should stop this prob.

: Eddie : 8)

And there is a TSB on getting this fixed. Dealer did mine for me when he was fixing the rear end he broke by not lubing it.

Don Miller
97 2500, #8 plate, 3k springs, PDR 370's, Scotty II, 16 deg timing, custom Trans by Frank.
Re:rattlin 4wd shifter
I took an exhaust flange spring (looks like a valve spring with one narrow end) and inserted it in the space below the side-to-side shifter pivot. The existing spring ends go through the tabs and hold the new spring in place. The shift lever ends up being pushed towards the passenger side. I compressed the spring with needle-nose Vicegrips and propped a stick between the shifter and the drivers kick panel to open up the gap. Tricky to get the spring in but it worked like a charm.
p.s. Wear safety glasses. I had that spring go wizzin past my head at about 100mph.

Re:rattlin 4wd shifter
The 92 I had did it from day one. I got so tired of hearing it that I finally put a moving blanket over it and kept the radio up loud. I took it to the dealer several times and they could never fix it..
