Questions about Fuel Filter / Water Separator?

Hi,

With a stock fuel system under normal conditions on '02 CTD what should happen when the water drain valve is opened up on the fuel filter / water separator housing? Is a lot supposed to drain out?

Should it be left open until all fluid drains out? I don't usually check mine every time I fill up but I never have been getting any lights for water in fuel either?

Thanks

I just wanted to post some more information about the reason I was asking about this.

I have checked the water drain valve several times but never really have had much drain out.

The past couple of months I started using some Power Service - Diesel Kleen + Cetane Boost. Today I opened up the water drain valve & it seemed to pour out & kept draining for a while. Was wondering if this is normal for this to happen. Probably had not opened up the drain valve for a couple of months.

I haven't opened mine for a couple years, I just do it if the light comes on.

when you open the drain your actually empting the fuel filter, you dont need to do it very often (or unless the light comes on) the drain valve is known to stick open and leak fuel or cause starting issues because it wont stop leaking.

if you had little to nothing drain out, you had better get a fuel pressure gauge on your truck (if you dont have one already). If you leave the drain valve open long enough it will empty the filter canister and likely the truck will start and stall, and the fuel system will need to be bled,

most guys who dont have a fuel pressure gauge find out their LP is shot when they go replace their fuel filter and cant get the truck to start after wards

Thank you for the information. I noticed that there is a test port fitting on the fuel filter housing as well as the fuel injector. Where should the pressure be checked?

Thanks
