Don't get the 4x4. You'll get yourself in deeper spots than a jack and a couple pieces of wood.
I had just all my ball joints on my suburban one night right about the time the wife had gotten home from work 11:00 PM. It always happens at night. So we thought we would go down this summer road, in the middle of winter during a rain storm, to lock in the hubs and make sure everything worked right. Well the road sloped just a little and the goo was so bad I couldn't keep the truck on the road. I slid off into a wheat field and kept sliding. As I powered up pointing up hill toward the road I just kept going further down hill. I finally quit and had to find a ride home and a ride back in the morning. I bought 100' of cable and a high lift to help get my rig out. Well the tow truck cable and my cable wasn't enough to get me out. Luckily the field was partially frozen enough for us to tear out of there on our own power.

And you blame having 4wd for this? I would blame not waiting until daylight, or choosing a bad night to try out the repair work.
The only time I go wheeling at night is when I WANT to get stuck- since we all know that is when the really memorable and catastrophic oops's happen.

4wd doesn't get you any more stuck than 2wd- it just makes way too many people think they can go places they don't know how to get out of. Look at all the idiots cruising at 70 in a snowstorm in their SUV's on the highway....doesn't mean they can stop or turn, but they're ignorance is covered up by their assumption of invincability.
