Power steering problem

Hey all. I am having a problem with intermitent assist in my steering. Thinking pump. But I noticed when I have the truck on a rack and turn the wheel from the inside it is hard to turn, and it sounds like fluid being forced under pressure. Is this natural, or do I have a problem? Thanks Dan.

If you are turning it with the engine off it sounds normal.
First thing I always try with PS problems is the addition of LubeGard.
Wonderful stuff.

Thanks Infidel. Yes it is with the engine off. I was hoping that part was normal. I have been looking for lubegard around here. I think maybe it was a post of yours earlier that made me start looking. I'll let you know what I find and if it works.

Here's where I buy all my LubeGard products online. It is very good stuff...

However, before adding the LubeGard PS Protectant I would replace some of the original nasty PS fluid with new Valvoline SynPower. The easiest way is to use a suction gun to remove 12oz from the reservoir and replace with new. Drive the truck for a day and repeat until the fluid is closer to clear. It may take 6-7 times before the fluid starts looking better. It definitely helps with cold weather performance, and gives the LubeGard a decent base to protect.
