Power steering gear leaking
Power steering gear leaking
Can anyone tell me if the input shaft seal on the power steering gear is replaceable, and perhaps the procedure to do it?? If I can do it without removing, that would be good!!!!!
hi
yes they are replaceable
get the new ones first as there are 2 seals , one is a o ring if i remember correctly .
did mine a while back and it is much easier if you remove the box , it is not hard at all easier than it looks !
remove the sway bar mount bolts <4> and it will swing down out of the way !
remove and plug return hose , was hardest to remove on mine .
seperate preasure hose near brake booster and plug to keep out dirt .
remove drag link from pitman arm , heat arm near jouint but far enough away so it does not burn boot and wack it , if it dont seperate heat it some more and wack it agin .
remove stearing shaft bolt and slide off input shaft .
remove 3 mounting bolts and box will drop right out.
now you wash off box and replace seals and adjust box easily so it stears like new .
reinstall , refill fluid, rotate side to side while moving truck slightly recheck fliud level .
testdrive , no leaks and feels right you are done !
i tied a magnet to my dipstick and clean it when i check fluid level !

I've done it without removing the box.
Remove the pitman arm, you will need a puller. Mark the location so you get it back in the right place.
Remove snap ring.
Start engine and turn the wheel, it will spit the seal right out. (and can make a mess if you aren't prepared)
Make sure there isn't a groove worn in the shaft where the seal rides. If there is you will need a speedy sleeve.
I've only dealt with boxes that have one seal, maybe other years have more.

It's been 3 years, but thanks for your advice! Great idea on pulling the snap ring and letting the system pressure push the seal out. I hate digging out seals!
