Pitman Arm
Pitman Arm
I need to remove my pitman arm from the gear box to install a PSC. I tried two gear pullers and a six foot breaker bar and broke both pullers. Do I need to heat up the arm or is a pitman puller my best bet?

My good 2 jaw puller was spreading right over my arm. Went to town & bought a cheap pitman arm puller and it came right off. Didn't have to beat on it at all. Get the right tool for the job.
I used a 5 ton 3 jaw puller and couldnt get it to bust loose but once I got the puller about as tight as I thought possible and started smacking the pitman arm with a small sledge it popped right off..

I did a little at a time. Tightened the puller, smacked it with a hammer.....tightened...smacked....etc.....etc... It took a while, but it worked great. Previously, I too had broken two other pullers....
I finally got it off. I rented a pitman arm puller and even that didn't work. I tried hitting a pitman fork with a ten pound blacksmith hammer and that didn't work. So finally I took the truck to work, pulled in the back of the shop, and grabbed the torch. Heated the arm up cherry red, put the puller on and....SNAP. She popped right off. I owe a lot of money to the swear jar.
I sold my torches a few years back so I ended up taking the pitman arm and the steering box and the broken pitman arm puller off the truck and putting them in the vice, using a pry bar to remove the broken puller then using a new puller along with a 10 lb sledge hammer. Good thing the steering box was already toast.
