passenger side rear door

The quad cab door will not open anymore. Can pull both handles nothing happens. Is there anyway I can get that door open so I can take the inside of the off to have a look in there and fix it. Thanks for your time.

I had the same problem. There's a cable in there with a plastic keeper on the end of it that will break and not allow the handle to be pulled. I took the door panel off and then Epoxied the keeper back together on the cable and everything works great now. I can't remember the price for a new cable from dodge, but it was ridiculous. That's why I fixed mine with epoxy. My buddies truck did the same thing and we fixed his like that too.

i just fixed mine after several years with it not opening.remove the handle on the inside of the door.the one you use to open the door.wiggle that out of the way yand you will be able to pull on the appropriate shaft to open the haspe.after the doors open you can remove the panel and get at the mechanism. mine only needed adjusting.carefull of the push tabs that hold the panel in place as they will rob you blind to replace them at the dealership.@$6 a piece.hope this helps.

I am fixing mine now as well... I have all the panels off, and am waiting for new power door lock actuators for both front doors, and new lower latches for both rear quad cab doors.

I also will replacing all the door hinge pins from ebay...

Just FYI. Local dealer in ontario gave me a discount on the parts, I have a relative that works there,,, otherwise it would have been twice as much as the same parts that can be found on ebay.

On the quad cab doors. The inside handle operates the top and bottom latches with a cable that goes to the outside handle, it pulls the outside handle mechanism. The outside handle has two rods, one to the top, one to the bottom latch.

If the door wont open with the inside handle, its the cable. They are about $35 each, but can be epoxied as a fix. See pic below...

If the door wont open with the outside handle it could be one of the rods or both have come off the handle. You will need to take out the handle to see. and then pull on the rods to open the door, so you can take the inside door panel off to get at the rods and push them back on the handle.

If the door wont open when you pull on the rods, the latch is seized. Generally it is the bottom latch that goes, the top one never sees water or salt.

This was the case with mine. The pas side went first, for a while it was just hard to open, like it was catching on metal, really had to yank on it, it was not long after that it would not open, not even with a swift kick from the inside.. eventually the drivers side quad door started to stick, and the kids could not open it anymore. So here I am with the skins off all my doors, waiting for parts...

If pulling on the rods does not open the door, and you can see its the latch, the latch will need to be forced off.

I was able to get my inside door panel off with the door closed, using a fork tool for pulling the christmas tree clips, local parts stores have them cheap if you break any.. Once it was off I could see the bottom latch would not release when I pulled on the rod. I had the fortune to be able to take off the drivers, side latch first so I could figure out how it worked, and how to get it off with the door closed.

Put a socket on the nuts that hold the quad cab door lower latch to the bottom of the door. Tighten these until they snap off. remove the rod from the latch. You will need to cut or bend off the little arm that comes through the bottom of the door from the latch. See pic below... I used a sharp chisel and big hammer, but saws-all or torch would work as well. Put a wet rag in there so you don't wreck the paint if your using a torch....

I have read that you could be able to hit the latch mechanism with small punch and make it open. mine was very stuck, and would not budge.

Once you get the top little arm off, the door should lift up a little and off the lower latch and open for you.... with the latch still attached to the truck.

I did not take a pic of the latch before I tossed it. But it has three fine thread torx style head bolts that thread into the latch from the bottom, and three nuts that hold it onto the door from the top. Once you get the door open, and the latch is stuck to the truck, you need to drill the bolts down enough to be able to drill off the top of latch. Once you drill the tops a little, you should be able to pry the top off the latch, and will be able to see the innards, take it apart to get it off the truck.

New lower quad cab latches for my 99 were $130 each.
Ebay has the door hinge pins, not available from any dealer or parts store here for around $40 for two doors. If your doors are wobbly that will put excessive were on the latches as well, so fix them too...

If your lower latches are still working, I would highly recommend, especially now that you have the doors apart anyway,, Take off the lower latch from you door, and clean the crap out of it, soak it, blow it out, or even take it apart and clean out the inside. You will need to drill the expanded metal from around the top of the bolt holes to get it apart tho... Then oil it up and put it back on. There is two springs in there, one is a coil, the other is more like a clock spring, they get rusty, weak, and break, full of crud, then the door wont open...

Sorry for the blur, this is the quad cab lower latch, you may need to brake off the nuts, and the little arm, if pulling on the arm does not release the latch and open the door... Don't forget to pull the top latch as well. The rod comes off with the red plastic tab.

This is the quad cab outer door handle mechanism from inside the door, the upper rod is still attached, the lower has been removed, and you can see a curved piece that holds the cable that comes from the inside door handle. That keyhole looking hole in the bracket is supposed to hole the cable in line with the mechanism.

This is what happens to the cable, the little plastic piece floating in the middle is supposed to be attached to the end of the plastic cable cover. It hold the cable in line with the latch. You may be able to epoxy this back in place,, I will leave it out, and just use the outer handle.

I searched and read the many posts on this, so Thought I would try to sum it up, at least what I have found anyway...

Good luck.. order the parts first, they seam to be getting rare...
