Pass. rear axle seal leak
My R.R. axle seal is leaking. I found this thread that seems to give all the info to replace it. https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...rear+axle+seal
Is there anything else to add to the above thread? Anything else i should replace while im at it besides shoes?
Is this seal leak a sign of something else that needs attention? Truck has over 160K and has had some braking vib. ever sense i put in the Chevy. cylinders. Could it be related to the leak?
Im going to replace my shoes in the proceess. Is it common to have the drums turned if your experiancing vib. while braking? The front pads and calpirers are a year old and rotors where turned, so im ruling them out as the vib. problem. Thanks for any input. -Jake

Well, if you do a little more searching, you will find even more info. I would make sure the vibration is from the back. Usually it is the front rotors that cause the vibration. I had a vibration problem, turned front rotors and installed new pads in front. Vibration went away for 5000 miles then returned. If the rear shoes were contaiminated with fluid, this will cause your vibration.
Usually the seal leaks "just because". Unless someone over filled, or the vent line is plugged, it is just time. You can inspect thye seal surface for a wear ring while everything is apart.
MNake sure the bearings are well lubed during reassembly, and be very careful on torqueing them. You tighten to xx ft lbs then back them of a certian amount.
When all together, find a parking lot close by and do tight figure of eights to send the fluid to the bearings, park on a level surface and check the fluid level again. It is not supposed to filled so that it overflows out the hole. Should be about 3/8th's of an inch below fill plug. Kevin
