painting truck

have any of you that have painted your truck--had the peeling paint issue? what I am wondering is, most of my white paint is peeling off, do I need to only take it down too the primer or must I go all the way to bare metal?

I am not sure of this paint issue. The primer seems to hold up well, but even with sanding will new paint stick to it?
Thanks

Your going to get several different opions on this...Mine was peeling..I sanded the whole truck and feathered all peeling ares.I primed with a high solids/sealer primar, wet sanded and paint...Two years and no problem..Maybe J Lent will give his ideas...I would be curious what he would say because he is doing a full "professial" restoration on his truck...

Peeling paint is usually due to the surface not being sanded correctly prior to painting. Pictures of the surface would help. If the paint is peeling in only one spot, I would feather edge that spot with 360, 400, then 600. Then prime that spot with Urethane high build primer & sand smooth using 400, then 600 grit wet. If the rest of the truck is fine, I would sand the entire vehicle with 600 grit. If bare metal is visible, I would spray epoxy primer onto the metal, wait 30 minutes, then apply my basecoat/clear. Epoxy primer is very hard to sand, if you plan on waiting for bc/cc, a urethane primer should be applied over the epoxy & sanded smooth.

im getting ready to paint my 99 for the same reason. the red paint is peeling on the hood and top of the cab. my body man said strip the paint down to the bare metal and start all over agian. he said that the reason the paint is peeling is because of the primer. he said if you paint over it eventually the paint is going to peel agian.

thanks for the replies! the truck has areas of peeling every place...it is just that I have heard that it is a problem with the primer. could I just sand down to primer or do I need to get thru the primer to bare metal?

I have done alot of reading on www.autobodystore.com forums. The site is awesome! You are getting advice from some of the finest paint/body guys. I haven't painted a vehicle since 2002 & that site has really helped me get back into the game. The moderator is a guy named Len, he has painted cars for 30 years & does some of the finest work I've ever seen. I hope he can help you as much as he has helped me.
